Good Video editing program?

Hi everyone! I'm looknig for a good (and cheap!) video editing program, I record programmes off the TV and will be getting a tuner soon for my pc and I'm looking for a program that will allow me to do some editing, but basically taking out the adverts!! I've tried to use Movie Maker but I've had problems with that and would like to know if there is any cheap alternative? I was looking at Sony Vegas Movie Studio, is this any good?

What file format are your recordings? I use VideoRedo to edit adverts from my mpeg/ts recordings, and its very quick.

they get extracted as VOB's, but I could convert them to any file format, though sometimes large programmes are spilt up into different parts, and then I have to muck about trying to stick the parts together and sync the audio
