Good wireless card needed

I am not sure whether to post on here or under hardware but I need a good wireless card for my son compatible with windows 7 64 bit.
We live in a stone house and signal strength can sometimes be a problem. The router is downstairs for better tv reception etc but the pc is upstairs.

I use an addon NWP210 for mine and it worked great (mine is upstairs too), but after I changed my hard drive and reinstalled windows 8, it just isn't recognised. I have downloaded the drivers but unless I put my hama adapter in the usb slot I get 'no connections available', so am adverse to buying a similar but pce one for him from them because I will no doubt get the same problems.

I hate drivers with a vengeance, they rarely run smooth for me.

Any help with a suggestion for a good suitable one for my son would be greatly appreciated.

I recently upgraded one in a friends build because of a similar problem, but I think it was to do with the new SuperHub from Virgin. The one I went for was This

It now gets excellent signal. Another option is to get some Home plugs, I have never used them myself but they are very popular with users facing wireless problems.

Do you know if they make the same type for pci2 or pcie4. I am that impressed with the feedback on signal strength I also want something similar for me ha ha.

Unfortunately my pce slot is to near to the graphics cards, but the two mentioned should have enough space.
