Well I took the plunge thanks to rainmaker of ditching Astraweb due to their speeds since being on 50meg as nothing short off erratic. $9.99 per month SSL 350 retentions and 30 connections and a giganews reseller.

Just a quick question to anyone using them regarding SSL.

Does entering a ssl port and simply entering news.supernews.com guarantee a secure connection?.

The reason I ask is that on astraweb, SSL proceeded the server name and its been so long since I've used giganews I cant really remember

Thanks

Chris

Yes. You wont be able to open an insecure connection to the server listening on SSL ports.

As a side note, ive used Astraweb on 100mb and had no speed issues, guess you were unlucky.

Thanks tntcoder that is good news thankyou.

Well I have been using Supernews straight since yesterday almost and it has stayed steady at 6MBps. Astraweb who were absolutely fantastic whilst on 20meg were a different beast on 50mb.
Dont get me wrong it took me a lot of headscratching and going through these ridiculous speedtesters to come to the conclusion and both could be equally to blame but for $10 a month it was worth it and touch hairy wood its been worthwhile.

I have been using Astraweb on 50mb for a good 4 months now and my speeds are superb as said its more likely your end.

Glad you got the SSL figured out, though I'm not sure how I made you switch?... Matrix forums? :) I agree about the speed issues, both on my 22meg Be line and my brother's 50 meg cable line. It seems not all people experience it, but it's definitely there. Add in Astra's four day ticket response times and incompletes and Supernews is a bargain, especially as it's even cheaper.

Supernews is $11.99 Astraweb is $11 through there special deal i don't see where super is cheaper ;) 30 connections is just piffle i only ever use 12 on astra and it gives me 6.2mb/s download speed, incompletes on astra lol can't say i had any yet :P

newshosting give me full speed out of my 50mb cable, no matter what time/day.

i never see less than 6.0mbps

EDIT: might be very important infomation for you, in the past i used AVG and newsbin pro. the speed always up/down all the time, i switched over to grabit, same problem. switched to avast anti virus, still same problem, but then i switched over to MSE. PERFECT!

some anti virus slow down download speed as need to scan all rar's first

Supernews Super Special, $9.99/month forever. ;) Don't forget Supernews is just Giga via a reseller, their servers are more than capable and actually much better than Astra's.

No they're not. I and many others dumped GN because of problems that they still haven't fixed. Lots of posts are fine everywhere but GN and this doesn't include the ones they trash themselves after DMCA notices.

I was referring more to speed and stability, but at any rate I've never had any issues. I was a Giga customer for years before I went over to Astra for 12 months. You get the odd DMCA yes, but it's a legal requirement that any NSP would have to adhere to if they were US-based. It happens. At least Giga only remove the first block from the set so you can still par2 them. You pays your money and you makes your choice. :)

Nice, now you'll be able to download all those Linux ISO's even faster! ;) :p

Wow its been a while since I have seen this thread!.

Also kinda funny how in the time ive been between Supernews and Astraweb twice and I am now using Astrawebs re-seller Bintube since starting this thread.

Astranews users, what servers and how many connections do you use to saturate 50 Mbps ? Ive been experimenting im finding splitting the load across multiple servers gives a good consistent speed around 5.8 MB/s but not 6.2 MB/s.

Given network and SSL overheads that's about as good as you're going to get. 5.8MB/sec is nothing to turn your nose up at on a 50Mbps connection! :p
