Well if it doesn't rain, it pours
I was visiting sunny Plymouth this afternoon and parked up as normal, no issues. Returned to the car and it was lumpy as hell. Oh oh. Eventually, after a number of non starts, the battery was dead, so had to call out green flag who turned up and sprayed some carb cleaner down the throttle body, which allowed the car to run for a second or two. We both deduced that it was a fueling issue, but having checked the fuse, it was either the pump or the control box.
Anyway, I pulled the back seat and undid the cover to get at the pump, hoping beyond hope that it was simply a lose connection. I jiggled, removed and replugged it, then started the car without issue on the first turn of the key
Ok, so a lazy pump? I then proceeded to drive to Ocean BMW (no I didn't see Fox there, although I was half expecting it
) to price up a new pump. £250 he said with a straight face. Looking on ebay, they are £49.
So I went to leave, but oh no, the car was having none of it. Despite having driven flawlessly the 6 or so miles from the centre to the outskirts, I had the same trouble, so tried the same thing again, but no dice. Dead battery after the 4th try.
So I book it in. I am now stuck at BMW with a wife and child and a broken BMW. The women makes all the right noises, but there were no courtesy cars (I somehow knew this would be the case) She suggests I contact Eurocar rentals, whereby they tell me they have nothing from their 250 car stock.
I sign the waiver allowing an hours diagnostic.
Helpfully, the chap at Eurocar called budget rentals and gave me a choice. A 107 or a VW tiguan at £80 a day. So I have a VW tiguan for a while. The woman at BMW said they wouldn't be able to look at it til tomorrow and thats only if she can reshuffle some about as they are booked up until Friday.
Interestingly, when I went to the toilets, you can see the door to the workshop and they are full of new BMWs in various states of dismantle, nothing older than a few years. Make of that what you will.
I was doing a little checking this evening, now that 3 have gotten their act together and turned data back on for Looe, I can use the internet and found out that there was a recall on fuel pumps, but for slightly later models of my car. Do you think I could chance my luck?
Anyway, sorry for the wall of text, but I'm feeling a little despondent that I am without my car, its going to cost an absolute fortune even if its something simple and I feel like setting fire to my car its costing me that much money.
I think I am going to have to face it that I will need to change the car sharpish, but it likely won't be another BMW.
Any recommendations?
