Goodnight Sweetheart...

Yeah thought the same, the whole time travel thing worked well given the break since it ended.

Hyacinth Bucket: The Young Years is on now. The lass is doing a great impersonation of her.

I caught the last two minutes of GS and then watched the first two minutes of that Hyacinth Bucket thing. It was rubbish so off it went. It certainly seemed to achieve the impossible of making me long to watch Keeping Up Appearances. It makes you realise how good Patricia Routledge's delivery was.

Young Rose was pretty tidy, mind you.

They killed the stuff that could be remade, an try an reinvent the old stuff, the mind boggles
edit is nicholas lyndhurst in it if i he is then its a must watch

Didnt like the intro or end credits at all, the new wibbly wobbly effect was crap i preferred the old effect when he steps through time. Phoebe seemed a bit like nervous acting instead of being used to it acting if u know what i mean at the start in the pub but later wasnt too bad. Rest of it was decent enough. Kids in it i didnt like tbh tho, wish they wernt in it.

Wouldnt say no to more episodes but its clear that he isnt welcome back in the future with Yvonne. So not sure what the point of the show would be.

Shame they waited so long to bring it back with em all older now. :(

Well, that was the best of the three I've seen so far. I actually laughed a couple of times. It seems that having the original cast does help a lot.

Still to watch Young Hyacinth.

Are you being served was absolutely terrible. Just completely cringe worthy.
Porridge was a bit better, but still... no...

This was the best of the remakes so far by far and would like to see a full series.

Absolutely right to keep the original cast.

Wasn't bad, though it seems there's a serious lack of imagination going on at present, just seems like they're throwing money at rebooting all their old popular series and seeing what ones get the nod in terms of viewers.

OFAH obviously not being one as John Sullivan died a few years back :(

No "seems" about it. There was an article about it on the BBC a while back, its an initiative and is exactly how you worded it. The BBC needs people to watch its content. Historically its been very popular with these situational comedies and it has a massive back catalogue to draw on, but people et tired of seeing the same old repeats. They are testing the water to see what people still find funny and what they can get away with.
"Open All Hours" is another example. I don't find the newer ones funny at all, but someone must as they keep being made.

Something like Sherlock costs a bomb to make in terms of cast, special guests, sets and location shoots so we get only a few episodes now and again, maybe even just a Christmas special.
Jonathan creek was the same. Very expensive. When they reduced the cast size, shrunk the sets and relocated to an inner city setting it was poo.

The GoodNight Sweetheart episode had a cast of 10? with 5? extras and 5 set locations all of which could have been any back street or random flat plus a pub. Cheap as chips.

and yeah, the new intro isn't a patch on the original.

Watched Young Hyacinth.

The chapess playing Hyacinth absolutely nailed the performance. Amazing casting there.

The rest of it... meh... There was a couple of good laughs in amongst it though.

Unfortunately I can't help but view these remakes with a great deal of cynicism, because I'm old enough to remember the originals of Porridge and Are You Being Served?

To be honest, I just think the BBC has lost the knack of producing good comedy, certainly in terms of what reaches BBC1 and 2 in any case. I can't believe the broadcaster of gems like It Ain't Half Hot Mum, The Two Ronnies, Fawlty Towers, Only Fools and Horses, Blackadder and The Young Ones - programmes that did and always will have me laughing myself stupid - is now reduced to showing tripe like Citizen Khan and desperately raking over its back catalogue.

Are You Being Served? was on a bit of a hiding to nothing - I was a fan of the gloriously un-PC original and given that the original cast have nearly all passed away, the end result was like watching otherwise credible, talented actors doing second-rate impressions of that original cast.

Young Hyacinth just irritated me, but then so did Keeping Up Appearances.

Didn't see the Porridge remake, but chances are I would have seen it as the same as Still Open All Hours - just not the same without the late, great, comedy god Ronnie Barker.

On that basis, Goodnight Sweetheart was the best of the bunch, although not really a remake in that it featured the original cast.
