A client has noticed a competitor has placed a sponsored advert at the bottom of the google maps screen.

Basically you search for company 'A' and get the map page up but at the bottom there is an advert for company 'B'

Any idea where to report this or how to get it removed?

So in an organic search in google you have found company A, but under the map company B is listed in Google Ads?

Don't think you'd be able to do much about that - unless I've misunderstood you.

Yes, that's about it.

Basically a rival has setup a sponsored ad at the bottom of the screen.

Our client is going crazy about it and as we support their IT it's obvisouly our problem to fix

Is the rival ad appearing on your clients website?

So your client is using Google Adsense, and has a competitor appearing in their adverts?

If that's the case I'm 99% sure there is an option to turn off competitor listings in your Google Adsense account.

It's not that complicated.

If you do a search on google maps for company 'A' you'll find the location and typical links to their website. However if you look at the bottom of the screen it's says 'Company A's name - Company B's website'

If it is on your website you can block the URL. If it is an advert on google maps itself then they are allowed to advertise for other companies keywords.

You can't complain about it. It's perfectly legal. Google recently opened up bidding on rival keywords. Previously you weren't allowed, but you are now. Gives Google more money.

edit: Just to avoid any confusion and to quash any arguments to the contrary - this is 100% correct, and I know this because managing Adwords is my job.

Assuming, of course, that you mean in an organic Google Maps search, an ad for another company appears when you search for your own company name.

Indeed if it's as simple as that mate not a lot you can do unfortunately.

It's a real pain! In my industry, there's actually something of a gentlemen's agreement not to bid on each other's keywords, so no ads show up at all. All you end up doing is competing for ad positions, spending more money on them and ultimately giving Google more money, when before it didn't happen at all. Using this agreement, nothing changes, and Google don't get their extra cash.

It's a cynical move from Google, and one that a lot of people would be surprised to hear. Google really aren't as lovely and friendly as they make out.

perhaps i have misunerstood what oyu meant but i don't see what google have done that is bad...

It's like your client moaning about a competitor advertising on a billboard opposite their building or something, I don't see what grounds they have to complain about a legitimate advert.

I'll let them know :)

edit.. Does this apply if the sponsored ad has their url in the link but company 'A' name in green to the left?

Greedy how? Google make money from advertising, they have sold advertising in this case. So in your eyes every company going about it's normal business is greedy. :D

Previously, a search for (for example), Overclockers wouldn't have brought up any ads because Google thought it unfair to have other brands competing on a search for what is blantantly Overclockers. However, now that we've all hit hard times, they've decided to forget about being fair and open the doors. Now searching for Overclockers could bring up all kinds of competition, stealing search traffic that would've otherwise gone to Overclockers.

Of course, OCUK could bid as well, but that's gonna cost them money.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. The URL is usually in green with a Google Ad.

edit: If you want, email me removed email. with the search term or a link to the result page, and I'll tell you if the company are breaking any rules. I won't tell anyone what the company name is or anything.

email on its way :)
