Just noticed the following websites for sale on 'the bay'. How much money would I realistically make from such a website? Has anyone had experience with this sort of thing? Is this a good idea?

Example 1
Example 2
Example 3

Are the above link classed as competitors? If so I'll gladly remove them.

You have to ask the question "If I can make more money than they cost to buy out of them, then why are /THEY/ selling them?"

I was thinking exactly the same thing, hence the reason I posted here.

Well I've previously made a few grand out of adsense, but that was a website that provided a service, rather than a collection of referrals.

I swear it's against google's policy to diplay more than three google ads on a page... I count at least 4 adsense ads

Hi there,

With Google Adsense a decent website can make £100's a day easily. But to do that, you need to have a decent site that ranks well in Google across a broad selection of search terms, that others are linking to and that of course is having a regular amount of traffic delivered to it!

Without traffic on your site, there are no people to click the ads... and obviously your money wont be coming in as swiftly.

On a site with lets say 800 visits a day, and a click through rate of 5% (presuming 5% of all people on your site click your ads) you could get 40 people clicking on your ads.

If your getting 20p a click, you make... wait for it... an amazing £8 a day.... Fantastic!

So you see the problem with this, Google say that around 5% click through rate is what to aim for... anything much higher than that and Google will look into your account and make sure your not cheating the system.

Edit:

I'm an SEO/Web Designer and Programmer for a company here in Wales... so get those questions a lot! :)

So you make your money back in 1-2 days. Sounds good to me. :p

Indeed, it is... Your only supposed to have 3 adsense ads on a page.

From experience google will actually turn off the other ads that are running on the page. But I've only experienced this with 3 of the same type of ads running on a page; in this case they've got different types of ads on the page... maybe thats a way to get around it

If anyone is serious about buying these domains and adsense things off google, heres some things to consider.

How old is that domain?

Use webarchive's Way Back Machine to see how old it is. A lot of search engines favour older websites... And it can be easier to build up links and build up a search engine rank for an old website rather than a brand new one.
http://www.archive.org/web/web.php

Does anyone link to it already?
How do you get into Google?
'Well you submit it using http://www.google.com/addurl/ of course!'

No... the easiest, fastest and most effective way of getting into Google (or any other search engine) is... LINKS... google crawls the top sites every day, most websites get crawled once a week or so, some once a month... if the googlebot finds a link to your site on their site... it follows... crawls yours... ranks yours... hey presto!
The better the link, the better you rank. Links from BBC,CNN (and other BIG websites) etc help more than a link from your mates Geocities website, but every link helps!

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=link:www.google.com&btnG=Search

Is that website right for me... Can I market it at all?
So you've seen a nice looking site on ebay, or have an idea for one... I saw one earlier for computer games for example.
Now you may think, 'Great! Nearly everyone on the internet plays computer games!'
But... lets look deeper...

Keyword Analyzer shows that '141,000' people type 'computer game' into Google UK every month.
So thats fantastic, you could reach 141,000 people a month with your Google Adsense program!

But...
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=computer+games&meta=
376 million results!

If you can get to number one in that list... you deserve your 141,000 visitors a month ;)

The reality shows your not going to climb up that list very fast... The first page alone has some big name sites on there (Yahoo and Wiki for example).
And from what I've seen most users don't go past page 2... with even less making it past page 5 in search results.

Or... or wait for it..... PS£ :D

like everything, you don't get money for nought.

These websites are rubbish, tehre just a bunch of links, how is that going to attract users and keep them coming back? it's not. the only way is to spam emails with the link.

However if you can create a website that interests people and have the time to keep it updated and interested. Then you have a chance.
