If I change my mobile number on my existing phone it is on Virgin and I'm not sure if I can do this. But if I can will my Google Authenticator still work.
I don't know if I would need a new sim to have a new number, trying to get in touch with Virgin at the moment is a nightmare.

Getting in touch with Virgin is nearly impossible so it looks like I won't be able to change my number for a while. If anyone does know if I can change my number with Virgin without changing my sim please let me know.

It's a while since I've done it but you need to login to your Google account and set it up again if it's a new phone with a different number.

However if you switch to Authy (Twilio Authy 2-Factor Authentication} now you can backup your settings to the Cloud and simply use those settings on a new phone to login again. There doesn't seem to be any restriction on how many devices you can use Authy on.

I switched from the Google Authenticator to Authy a few months ago after a discussion thread on here and much prefer it.

I wish Google Auth would sync to your account. Seems silly that it doesn't. I manage a system that uses MFA and I'm constantly helping users that have got a new phone and have to reset their MFA to link it. Does my nut.

That said, I didn't think Google Auth cares about your phone number or anything else. I might be wrong though.

As above, GA doesn't depend on your number, just your account. As long as you're using the same phone nothing will happen.

Can confirm it's been fine when I was travelling abroad and using local SIMs, although I have moved away from GA and using a mix of Microsoft and Authy as they offer backup/sync.

Agreed, this will only be a problem if you change handsets. Also agree that its a bit crackers it doesn't sync to your account. I was a bit surprised when I found that out recently, certainly glad I checked before wiping the old phone.
