Google Cards/Notifications on Android - How to stop them?

Recently I've started to get Google notifications appear on my phone.

These range from local train schedules/delays, weather even one popped up when I was in a supermarket, to do with that supermarket.

How do I stop them?

They never used to happen, clearly some update has started them or re-set something to make them start.

Any ideas on where to start looking?

As per title, Android on aging HTC One.

Google app (previously Google Now, I think) will be the culprit. Go into settings>notifications>your feed and you can select what shows up etc. I've just started getting 20 or so from that app but no idea what's caused it.
