Google Chrome Beta

What's the big draw of Chrome? Is it the fastest? I'm tempted to grab the nightly :p

The speed difference between Webkit and Chrome nightlies probably isn't noticeable. But Chrome is definitely faster at loading, opening new tabs and general performance so far, even with extensions installed.

Hmm, thanks, food for thought :D I am tempted to switch as FF is slow to load initially. Most of the addons I have for FF I don't really use much :o

I've never had a problem with Safari, it's been a great browser for me. But I've been itching to switch to chrome ever since it became my browser of choice in windows. It doesn't disappoint in speed and I never bother with extensions so simplicity is all I need.

I'm not going to bother until it's out of beta.

The only things I'd like to see in Safari are:

  • A better implementation of the "AwesomeBar"
  • Waiting until the next page loads before offering to save a username/password.

Doesn't work on my Powerbook unfortunately. I presume it won't work on Power PC.

I prefer the flexibility of Firefox over Safari. I would have been interested in seeing the speed difference.

Looks exactly like the Safari 4 beta (with the tabs like that).

It "works" on Windows because the area that isn't taken by a tab is translucent, but on OS X it's solid grey. Doesn't look very pretty.

Safari is uber fast on Snow Leopard (even faster if using webkit) but getting away from the gecko engine is always a good thing. I've found Firefox to be getting a little flabby as the version number increases which is a shame.

Google Chrome Mac Beta

Anybody else giving this a try?

It's finally been given beta status! Link here!

Installed and typing this in chrome as i type. So far it seems very, very fast! Will give it more testing before i give a verdict. But at the moment it seems quicker than safari even when using webkit.

Give it a go! :)

I'm using it and quite like it. The only thing i don't like is when you click the dock icon it doesn't bring the window straight back up, you need to right click and pick the window.

Also lately my Safari keeps beachballing of death on me when i try to open a new tab. So this is quite good lol

Firefox and Safari run perfectly on my MP at home but I will be trying out Chrome on my mini at work.

With a few add-ons Firefox crawls on the mini but I need some of the add-ons which no other browser does yet. I know Safari has Web Inspector but it's just not as good as Firebug!

Chrome is based off Webkit so it uses the same web inspector unfortunately. I'm not sure if there's any add-ons yet that expand on it for Chrome.

They have the newer inspector in google chrome. Lots of useful things have been added to it over the inspector that ships with safari. You might find it's better suited for you now. I know I'll take it over firebug any day.

Probably going blind but has the status bar gone missing in chrom? Can't seem to find it and the quick blue status bar doesn't seem to be appearing either.

As to why one might switch, Safari has problems with a number of javascript apps on my macbook. Sends the fans into constant high spin, FF has been better for me.

Yeah there is no status bar in Chrome. You should have a small status bar appear in the bottom left when you hover over links or when a page is loading.
