Google Chrome problem

I'm trying this browswer as I haven't tested it before but I've come across a problem.
I can't get Java to work with it, I've downloaded and installed it but whenever I view a page that requires it I just get the message to tell me that I need the Java plug-in to view content. I've tried downloading and installing numerous times with no luck.
Anybody else having a similar problem?

Is it the same in Firefox/Opera/Safari, if you have any of those?

No problems in Firefox or IE, just Chrome

Another problem I've discovered is that on a lot of sites (including Google Mail ironically) it won't dispaly tick boxes which is a bit of a PITA
