Google+ Discussion Thread

My thoughts on G+ so far is similar to the way I use twitter, in that because few of my close friends/family use social networking sites I don't usualy post much, but it is a good way to follow interesting people and bring everything together into a single place. The other feature I would love in G+ is nested/overlapping circles, for example being able to have a person in both a friends circle and an OcUK circle. On the subject of OcUK circles, would it be worth having a thread or a constantly updated post in this thread for people to link their profiles for people that want to put people they know on OcUK into an OcUK circle?

I already have an OcUK circle, were all in a huddle as we speak.

I firmly believe it will not work, its not an independent entity as Facebook is, its predominately male/geek, the general public don't know or care about google services other than its search.

Google is fighting to create so many services instead of honing its core products.

The End.

It depends if they intergrate other features it may work but they have to be careful.

im calling it, this will die off in about 6-12 months, none of the masses will jump from facebook, its just not as nice to use as facebook

Googlemail started off with the same 'invite only' approach when it was first introduced too, it's not uncommon for them to incubate products this way before launch.

You can already drag someone in to several circles which is basically what you're talking about unless I'm mistaken?

Circles is pretty cool but it's a pain to share stuff with multiple circles. I guess you don't want too many of them. And you'll need to do housekeeping to make sure people are in the right ones...

It's not that much of a pain surely, compose the post/share and select or type a circle in the box, then select or type a second circle, then a third, etc etc etc?

Anyway, with the whole Google+ Vs Facebook, Facebook has a few features (thinking mostly events here) and of course the 750 million users as a fairly strong starting position, not sure Google+ will die though, whether it ever takes over is another matter but I can see it staying there as a long-lived competitor, but who knows.

I think Google have a trump card in Android, they've already got a very good app (now on iOS as well) but if they integrate Google+ into Ice Cream Sandwich at the OS layer then that's one hell of a selling point...

The reason it's a Geeky Sausage fest is that it is currently invite only.

When Android handsets start shipping with the G+ App I reckon it could take off fairly well, this is because when you sign up to the market you automatically create a Google account, meaning everyone using the Android market will have a G+ account, a couple of pop-ups in the notification bar saying 'Welcome to G+, click here to search for your friends on G+" and even the most techno-illiterate (my sister still has stock icon layout on her desire :/) person will be on it.

That's what I reckon could happen anyway.

We all know what happens when you start bundling your own apps in with your OS though!

Google Buzz anyone?

It's not though, it's much more than that.

Google buzz was an attempt to... Well I'm not entirely sure what they were playing at! Replicate twitter? Google+ is facebook, with extras.

I reckon it will do very well. The amount of people registering new Android handsets every day is testament to how popular it *could* become, if Google play their cards right.
