Google+ Discussion Thread

We all know what happens when you start bundling your own apps in with your OS though!

You become a massively profitable market leader before someone comes along and gives you a slap on the wrists? :p

Google Buzz anyone?

Buzz was a disaster, automatically opting people in to it at launch is something you need to indoctrinate your users into over time (see Facebook :p) not just assume they won't mind, and after that it didn't matter what it was/did it was always going to be a disaster.

Hopefully they've learnt their lesson, so far they seem to be fairly respectful of privacy (lets face it, all social networks are a data mining exercise so there's limits to the benevolence...) but there's still time for them to screw up :p

This is really my first foray into using social networks - seen them since their dawning but always seemed a bit naff, IMO, but then I'm just not very social.

Feels to me like there's a layer missing perhaps though.. I'd prefer to selectively tag the kind of things I talk about and let people subscribe/unsubscribe to that as they wished (as I would have it on a blog), rather than assuming Fred wants to hear about my bellybutton fluff adventures just because he seems to smile and nod until I shut up about it, when really he only wants to see the pics of my sister.

I'm probably missing the point somewhere though.

No you have to have already done that bit, otherwise it doesn't work. You don't get a slap on the wrists if you aren't a monopoly. A) You can't abuse your position and B) You don't have so much cash it makes countries look like peasants.
