Been reading up on this today, the giant Google looking to get into the gaming action,

Google has reportedly invested more than $100 million in Zynga, a popular social gaming company, and is quietly preparing to launch a new product, Google Games, later this year.

According to TechCrunch and their "multiple sources", Google (and not Google Ventures - the search giant's venture capital division) has secretly pumped between $100 and $200 million into Zynga, the company responsible for many of the major social networking games that have become extremely popular including Mafia Wars, Farmville and Cafe World.

But that's not all. TechCrunch says the two companies are working on a "strategic partnership" which will see Zynga become the "cornerstone" of a new Google games platform to possibly debuted later this year.

I preferred Google when it was just Google - the search engine. :( It is getting too big now IMO.

Pitty they never bothered making google talk even remotely userble. You can't even video call. You have to use gmail for that and it constantly turns down the sound of everything else on your pc at the same time. Even if you mute the mics.

Over $100million into zynga?... Maybe they'll make some better games.

So You'll have google games, search, e-mail, calendar, documents, maps, youtube... My bet is they'll try another social site, and make zynga exclusive to it, sign in with your existing google account and away you go. You could do much of your internet useage without leaving google at all.

if you read the rest of the article its says they are doing social network site (again)

"Google Me" will be along shortly :D

Nothing really exciting for most of us here. Whatever opinion people have of Zynga's games, they are successful so Google are getting a nice slice of that cake and when it comes to launching their own OS and possibly social network it will be a nice card for them to play.

well 'google me' is coming, and half of us will already be members, ie we have gmail, or google sign or you tube accounts.. ;)

My company has a gaming division on facebook, i saw some of the market research for Zynga.

Farmville had (going back 6 months) 68 million unique players a month.

Minimum purchase is $5. If just 1% of the monthly users purchase something that would come to $3.4 million a month.

Don't underestimate the sadness of humans, look at the people that spend fortunes on WoW, 2nd life, Sims etc, it's very easy if you can make something that is addictive.

There was a seminar presentation by some guy that pointed out that FarmVille made more money than all of the CoD games. I'll try and dig out the vid...

Google need to make something akin to the old MSN Zone, back in the day when you could play proper games such as Age of Empires through it :)
