I know that Google have killed off a lot of things that they attempted to make a go of, but didn't realise how many!

I had no idea they'd killed off Hangouts. I suppose part of being a successful company is knowing when to chuck something.

A lot of this stuff sounds like a good idea on paper - but the convenience factor just isn't there - or getting it to a place where the convenience factor is there is just far to big a hurdle unless someone has very deep pockets and willing to take a big risk.

EDIT: That and in some cases when there is an established player with first mover advantage you almost never can shift them unless they **** up themselves in a major way.

I know, because I was using it at the time. I mean, I was probably one of the five people on the face of the earth using it, but still.

I mean it hasn't really gone, it just migrated into Google Chat? Google's answer to iMessage.

Yep, it just shapeshifted really. It still died with me at that time as the usual outlets were all GOOGLE HANGOUTS IS NO MORE so I migrated to other messenger services and haven't looked back.
