Craziness for them storing your video securely online. I think I'm silly enough to pay Nest around £3 a month... I think I pay Ring about £2 a month... Maybe I should think about saving that £5 a month and using inferior products?

I have a Ring doorbell but I don't pay any subscription. Everything is saved to my nas.
And the Nest doorbell subscription is more then what you think.

Fair enough, I'm just going off the Nest Cam sub price, which to me is fine. (How much is the doorbell sub?) I would much rather store in the cloud, on the off chance burglars would take my file server with them... then I would be left with nothing! I also like reviewing the footage from work.

I'm amazed they need to charge at all to be honest. I can't imagine over say 30-90 days* the average user would amass that much video content to store.

*Assuming they just keep it for the recommended time period for security? They don't keep it forever do they?

There will be a retention period for the storage and it should be stated when you look at their storage/subscription options. Personally I've never trusted any of that faff at all as they can and will increase the price in future and I'd rather not be locked into such things.

I run 2x 1080p security cameras at my place, with built in SD card recording (can be accessed remotely via phone) and I'll be going with a centralised storage route very soon. I'd do the same with a potential doorbell in future - likely to be Ring as there are 6 folks on my street alone with them.

"How much is the doorbell sub?"

£ 4 per month or £ 40 per year for the Nest Hello doorbell sub via Nest Aware. Without Nest Aware you get 3 hours of history.

When comparing to the Amazon's Ring doorbell, worth keeping in mind that the Nest Hello is both a video doorbell and a smart video camera. Nest Hello has a more powerful wireless chip (a dual band 802.11ac) inside than Ring. One of the issues with Ring is that the WiFi is quite weak so you need to have a really strong signal to use it. Also, since the NH is hard wired it can record 24/7, just like other Nest cameras so you can scroll back easily.

So the notification system basically works by notifying your smartphone anywhere in the world when the doorbell is pushed and the chime rings. When at home I like the option of having my Google Home ring so I can answer just by voice.

Nest Hello has person recognition built in. When you sign up for Nest Aware you get facial recognition so the alerts tell you who is at the front door.

When at home, NH gives you the option to turn on Quiet Time which stops your chime or bell ringing if you or a family member is asleep. When you want to reply you can use one of three pre-recorded replies that covers all eventualities.

When NH is available here in mid June, you can buy it online or via John Lewis, Currys or Argos.

Been using my GHM as an alarm for a good few months but this morning it didn't go off. Asked it when my next alarm was and said there was no alarms set . Anyone else randomly had their alarms disappear?

Been using my Google Home Mini as an alarm for about a month without any problems, then last week I had exactly the same thing happen.

I've got a few Ring devices around the house and have no wifi issues at all (2 doorbells, 2 floodlight cams). Also, all Ring doorbells can be hardwired - I have the Pro on my front door which can only be hardwired and a normal Ring doorbell on my side door, which is wired but also has a battery.

If you're going to pay spam products on behalf of Google, at least be accurate/honest. :)

Wut? Huh?

A simple Google search will reveal forum comments like this one recently on Reddit:

Yes the problem can be fixed with time and effort but there is clearly a problem and many people have spent far too much time with Amazon Ring Helpdesks for you to claim the WiFi signal problem does not exist.

Nice try. ;);)

You 100% work for google in some way.

Wrong, but nice try.

Nope. I've read your posts in the motors section. And even in there you post rubbish and back google up to the hilt.
And no one there takes you seriously. Time to fess up dude or post the truth in the 1st place.

Interesting note from DigiTimes comparing approach between Google Home strategy and Amazon's. Look for Google Home/Assistant to bring GH to many more countries in many different languages. Also they see niche applications like "medical and smart healthcare" being very important areas for GH in future.

Google gearing up for Google Home, says Digitimes Research
Enoki Chen, DIGITIMES Research, Taipei
Friday 8 June 2018
Google has been pushing sales of its Google Home devices to more markets and has also incorporated Google Assistant into the smart speaker as it is gearing up efforts to compete against Amazon in the smart home market, according to Digitimes Research.

Google announced recently that it will make its Google Home smart speaker series available in seven more markets in 2018 compared to the availability of Amazon's lineup of Echo speakers in at least 36 countries. However, Google's plans to enable Google Assistant to support up to 30 languages, leveraging its deep research in multi-language and semantic, by year-end 2018, will make Google Home a strong contender to Echo, which supports only three language via Alexa.

Google is also actively soliciting cooperation from hardware manufacturers, not only to enrich the product portfolio supporting Google Assistant, but also aim to simplify user's operation processes for smart household appliances, or efficiently integrate support for smart products, while also addressing the security issue faced by IoT devices currently.

Digitimes Research believes that more market-niche applications such as medical and smart healthcare are likely to emerge as smart home devices have continued to evolve to become mainstream. Granted that the need for smart healthcare may eventually spur up demand for smart home devices, and single-person households are also likely to increase the purchase of smart home products, the smart home device market is expected to grow exponentially in 2018."

I picked up a Google Home Mini yesterday. Went for the Mini as I have a B&W Zeppelin and an AV Receiver which has Chromecast Audio built in. My plan was to stream Music to the AV Receiver as the GH is in the lounge. However, it just won't work. I can see the AV receiver listed as a speaker on the "Add TV/Speaker" node under "More Settings" but tapping "Add" does not do anyrthing. The AV receiver is listed under my devices and is "Ready to Cast". I can cast music to it from my phone with no drama, just GH does not want to talk to it. Have I done something obviously wrong? They are all on the same WiFi network but the Google Home Mini and the Onkyo AV Receiver just will not talk. I can get it to work over Bluetooth but not Chromecast Audio which is highly annoying! I've tried selecting the Input on the Onkyo to "Chromecast" but this makes no difference. I should add that you do not normally have to do this.

Perhaps it might be worth calling Google Home support with your question. I have not used Chromecast Audio. I was waiting for Google Home Max to arrive in the UK to meet my audio needs.

I have found lots of good uses for Google Home but one area that I would like to see better options would be shopping from Home. I appreciate there are some options but I would like to see more.

This is one area where Amazon Alexa is better. So how can Google address this?

I wonder if one way is along the lines of what they did yesterday, which was to announce an investment ($550 million) in a partnership with the Chinese e-commerce company, JD.com. While Alibaba dominates the China market with perhaps 60% of online retail sales and JD sits at 25%, I think it is outside China(South East Asia, US and Europe) where Google expects to work with JD to combine Google's search/ad placements, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Google Cloud adoption, I expect the most interesting part of their partnership will extend to shipment and delivery. While Google's Waymo might address shipment and delivery in future (unless of course they bring Google Shopping to Europe which I doubt), I see JD a partner that could help near term.

In the US Google Home/Assistant works for shopping with WalMart, Target and others and in Europe Google reached a similar partnership with Carrefour in France. Could the JD partnership help Google with home shopping and delivery in the UK? Or will they need to work with others?

I was surprised that only 6% of smart speaker owners use them to control smart home devices like lights, thermostats, fridges, kettles, etc. In my use of GH I find in winter the thermostat use is probably first or second many days and controlling my smart kettle a close second, with music playing third.

Lead uses was asking and have a question answered and asking about the weather. Discovering and playing music was the third most active use case.

IHS Markit expects home device use to rise rapidly.
