Google has unveiled a new chip which it claims takes five minutes to solve a problem that would currently take the world's fastest super computers ten septillion – or 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 years

are they still designed for a specific problem set? and everything else they would be slower than a normal super computer.

they can't even run games right? so already worse than intel

Cat burglars: scientists try to solve mystery of why felines ‘steal’ random objects

Researchers unsure why animals turn up with items such as socks and gloves – but agree pilfered items are not presents

Interesting they stuck this into the post.

It lends credence to the notion that quantum computation occurs in many parallel universes, in line with the idea that we live in a multiverse, a prediction first made by David Deutsch.

Strange times we are living in when Google (who one would not associate with CPU’s) come out with this announcement.

I mean Intel or AMD maybe, but Google?

Yeah indeed. Don't worry no doubt Apple will release an M6 chip soon which will do the same thing.

They haven’t launched anything. Just unveiled what is the next milestone.
The article even says they’re years and billions of dollars from the real thing.

Google have been designing quantum chips for a long time (at least circa 2019).

In short it sounds like, given amazon have just hit PR with their own chip for AWS, they’re just adding to the hype.

Quantum is one of those highly mathematical areas - you can have a small chip and still do a lot, however not every mathematical problem warrants to needs a quantum solution.

Smells like someone needs next srt of funding.

To me any problem is not look at the tech but show me it solving the problem (even if it’s a subportion of it etc).

Doesn't quantum computing destroy encryption security as we know it?
Honestly when AI gets access to that **** its time travel time amongst other impossible theoretical nonsense.

Certain algorithms developed for quantum chips search and solve prime numbers faster.

The US has banned RSA from 2035.

What will be commercial first.

1: Quantum computing (not cryptography as that's in use right now)
2: Nuclear fusion reactors (already a tracked roadmap of reactors going live so this /is/ happening and the UK has penned one of the first)
3: Solid state batteries (commercial products using them are penned as early as next year)

Actually the question answers itself

Quantum has already pished the boundaries in material science but AI is something that all board members can get happy and recieve bonuses for enabling and jumping on the bandwagon.

Quantum computing will be first to market and become big, then it will be bought out by Maxtor, who in turn will be bought out by Seagate.

Be interesting to see how many are old enough to get that one...
