From the video on the Gamasutra link, it seems to be similar to 2nd Life. Going to take a look on the official site now.

Internet giant Google has announced Google Lively, a browser-based online world which is embedded in major social networks such as FaceBook and MySpace.

Haha agreed. I didn't think anything could be worse than 2nd Life, but Google have surpassed themselfs as always.
