Google Maps for Android - performance issues

I have a Samsung Galaxy Alpha. Recently Google Maps (usually used for Navigation) seems very slow and unresponsive to start with - with a poor framerate once up and running.

It used to behave well in Samsung multi-window but now seems to lock up if run with another GPS app (but it definitely performs worse than it used to, even alone).

Is this a general thing or is it perhaps a problem with my phone? Has Google Maps become more demanding - too much so for mid-range and low end phones? Is it a bit of a RAM or CPU hog now? I've done the usual stuff like clearing cache and data but that hasn't improved things.

It seems that there may have been a conflict with GPS Status & Toolbox. I tried uninstalling it and Google Maps seems a lot more perky. It had become practically useless for navigation. I'll give it a try for navigating again and see how it goes.

Made it a bit better - but still not solved it. It's not usable for navigation at the moment.

Had another go. Deleted the Google maps cache and app data in application manager, uninstalled updates (so went back to factory version - all of which I'd done before). Then went trawling through system folders and deleted the Android\Data\com.google.android.apps.maps directory. Then allowed Google play to reinstall the updates.

It appeared to be working properly on my morning commute. Fingers crossed.
