Google Maps updated to allow local storing of maps

Google Maps has done this for about the past 6 months. I have had over 50MB of map tiles stored on my phone before.... Indeed it works great for Navigation as all you do is zooom in and out around your route so that, if you lose 3G, it can still guide you even if you go off course slightly

Before this update though I believe you needed a data connection to even start the app so it wasn't really any good if you were out and about unable to get a connection or on a device without a connection like a tablet.

Can someone point me to where this option is within the app?

EDIT: Nvm, found it.

Awesome. The navigation companies must be seriously worried.

Not for a while - google navigation, while a great free product, has only very basic functionality and is being developed quite slowly. A blue route on a roundabout with blue motorways is particularly annoying and the voice is TERRIBLE.

I actually think the nokia offering is easier to navigate with

But I think its adequate.

But they bought, for a lot of money, Navteq and their existing system which was quite good.

Adequate for the odd journey but I would argue that anyone that drove a significant amount would still invest in a dedicated product.

And yes they did buy it but it's provided to their users for free, last i checked anyway

will this work for google navigation app? so the navigation app will use the google map app maps that you've downloaded onto your phone so no longer require data connection if in the 10 mile area?

i'm shocked people don't think sat nav companies are worried. i will never need a sat nav with this. not only is it free, it's also part of something i'll always have on me, and it's better. you get things like traffic reports and other useful features sat navs don't do, or if they do they charge.

only one downside to navigation app and that's the voice isn't great, though oddly sometimes it changes for one moment and becomes fine

Can anyone tell me if using GPS abroad on my Desire will use up roaming data? I've cached maps for where we are going which is great, but I was just wondering if I could stick my GPS on and use that as well without getting charged?

GPS functionality is technically just a receiver, so shouldn't use any data whatsoever. However, it'll always make an attempt at connecting to the internet to make use of 'assisted GPS' which speeds things up a bit. To ensure it can't do this, make sure the 'data while roaming' option is unchecked. Or better still, just completely turn off 'Mobile Network' while you're abroad.
