Google Nexus One / HTC Desire

Beware though, Froyo is (almost certainly) going to be announced on the 20th May, the Nexus 1 WILL get this update almost immediately, the Desire probably won't get it for months, years or ever

The other issue, if this bothers you, is that Nexus is aimed at devs, and is stupid-easy to root and mess with

Paul from Modaco is still wrestling with rooting the Desire in a simple manor by the sounds of it

Oh don't scare monger.
HTC and Google are extremely close - expect the upgrade very soon after the Nexus 1 gets it.

Stop talking crap...the Desire will get the update perhaps not as quick as the Nexus1 but it will get it.

Hero says otherwise. Sense takes a while to adapt to new OS's its not scaremongering at all, it will get it, just not any time soon.

HTC Magic and G1 have gotten 2.1 today.... Via a 3rd party

It seems relatively easy to put a Nexus One ROM on a Desire, but you need to be rooted to do it, and a lot of people would rather wait

That's because it would make the Hero a competitor to the Legend, which they are reluctant to do, not because it takes them ages to do it. Besides, the Desire basically IS a N1 so it wouldn't take much effort if any to upgrade it.

You seem to underestimate how much effort building Sense for an new OS will be. If they were both running stock 2.1 then I'd agree, but they're not, so the Desire upgrade will require a LOT more work

Really? HTC have been saying they will update the Hero since last year, I'm sure it will be updated eventually, but it might take a while, I admit the "months, years, ever" part was supposed to be a bit of a joke.

Close as they are, the reason that HTC alone (if they did) got access to the 2.1 source code early was because they were developing the Nexus One with Google. If reports are correct then the Nexus Two is going to be the followup to the Motorola Droid/Milestone.

Still, the hardware is very similar, it should be trivial to get the vanilla 2.2 working on the Desire. The only question is how long it will take to get Sense working properly.

Sadly the Hero is a old tech phone now the specs of it were poor when it was released am sure they will be pushing updates faster on the Desire and Legend as its there new phones out.

But for a year it was the flagship handset and still there were no updates for any of the 3 major revisions to Android.

I would hardly call the hardware poor. Its not up to N1 standards but a 500mhz phone is not bad!

I would expect to measure the time it takes HTC to release Froyo to the Desire in weeks rather than days.

Hopefully they'll prove me wrong, but I'd be reckoning on at least 6 weeks after the N1 gets it.

It won't be difficult at all.
The new OS is not going to be "completely new".
Like programs that run under one version of Windows, chances are they will run under the next non-major revision.
Think Win95 - Win98.
Also HTC will have had access to Froyo for ages.

Mark my words - Desire will get it and not all that long after the Nexus.

I am confident Desire will get the update, its much higher selling phone in the UK compared to the N1 they would be daft not to.

It's highly unlikely Desire users will have to wait any length of time for 2.2 to be put out...this is the flagship HTC phone at the moment and HTC have already confirmed the 720p updates and other plans in various articles.

The Desire has not been out even a few weeks, the N1 been out ages. Yes the N1 is easier to root and the Desire will be as well once the rooting method is further worked on.

It better do, even on the 3rd itteration of the rooting method it still requires VMWare or a linux live cd :/
