How do I do a better search in Google.

I want to search for specific names, like "simon" but not to include lines in an address - so not "simon Street" etc

Is there any way to refine a search to include words but exclude phrases?

could do but that would ignore the whole document, I just want it to ignore the phrase "simon street road etc" but still search through for Simon

Would: simon street -"simon street" work? i think that searches for things with simon and street in , but doesnt include the phrase "simon street".

would that not ignore any documents with street and road in it?

edit - beaten to it - will try and see

Nope, still want it to include the doc with simon and "simon street" just not include the docs with only "simon street"

sorry, getting confused

I want it to search all docs with simon in it as a seperate word from the address.

So want docs with "simon" and "simon street", or with just simon but do not want docs with just the "simon street" only.

I think the technique that geuben suggested works, and I just tried it with Chinese Civil War.

I tried searching for all sites about China and War but excluding any results with the specific phrase "Civil War."

I did this by typing +China +War -"Civil War".

The result was lots of pages with the words China and War but not "Civil War".

What I said does what I thought was intended, but not sure if its possible to do what the OP wants, or i just dont know how to.

as above, I tried it and it omits all docs with civil war in them, but I dont want to exclude those docs, just want to filter them!

So you want to make sure you get those results as opposed to filtering them?

I mean, and I don't mean to sound like I'm taking a dig, but it's hard to figure out exactly what you're looking for.

It's kind of vague.

Nope, im stumped. Have tried all the different combinations of logical operators i can think of and it wont give the right results

I'm looking for a solicitor that my grandfather used to use in derby, havent got any of the docs here and cant remember his surname. Thought I could search but it keeps coming up with solicitors on derby street, James street - and there is millions of them.

Now he could be one of them but then I have to open each one up to see if there is a solicitor names James on thier books.

Hmmm, I'm not sure if it'll help but I always use Google Maps "business search" function for this. It'll find all listed solicitors for you in the town of Derby. Probably not helpful as it's really unspecific, but...

Click here if you want to check out the list of results that it gave me.

I hope this helps somehow, I just find it much better than typical Google searches.
