Google "Showing results for", how?

Does anyone know where or why Google search gets its "Showing results for" info from?

ie you type in a subject and it will suggest a closely related subject.

is it referencing from commonly searched subjects?

Google knows all

I imagine it is a combination of commonly searched terms and knowledge built up from indexed pages.

Not sure, but I generally wish it wouldn't. A lot of science-related searches I do get turned into something inane about celebrities or some such drivel.

Yep - most likely a combination of that (or related edit distance metrics), and a long list of common spelling mistakes!

put my user name into google "matt82" and then press space

Google is just skynet in disguise. Any skynet knows all.

Also Google uses the WOPR to help it's search results.
