google sync and the iphone

I use it for calendars, contacts, and googolmail and its very reliable. Bear in mind I have Push switched off as it rapes battery life. Instead upon launching the contacts/mail or calendar apps will make them fetch the updates instead.

It pretty much works very well from my experiences, and I've been using it from the first week it came out. I used to use Outlook 2007 for all of this but got sick of relying on that app constantly. I was rather hesitant in using Google to store my contact info at first but gave in.
 
sounds good then, will give it a try, just it says beta. I think google tend to leave beta on things for like ever.

you mention push, i assume that is only for contacts and calendar and not the mail service?

Yeah I think push for the mail service wasn't ready or something. It hits battery life very hard on the 2.x iPhone firmware though. I ended up having to charge my phone 2-3 times in a single day so it just had to go. I didn't make enough updates to my calendars/contacts to even justify instant push updates anyway.
 
Ive been thinging of trying this.

Currently my contacts are synced with Windows Contacts, will I need to import these into my gmail account first before setting up? Is there a simple way to do that?
 
will give it a go and set mail to imap and fetch every 30mins and see how the battery life lasts.

You need to copy your contacts to google first before syncing as i understand it

Got my contacts in Google...unforunatly I cant add Google Sync as the iPhone only supports 1 activesync account and I've got my work email on there. O well...
 
Push pushes your data instantly to your phone as you make the changes.
Manual checks the server everytime you launch the Mail/Caldendar app (this is a guess btw)
Fetch checks the server every x amount of minutes. I set mine to check my data every 15mins.
 
Works okay for me got my Google Calendar and contacts for home and my work syncing to my calendar as well
However I decided I didn't like my work syncing to my phone so I just stopped it.
