Google test self drive cars

There's still the risk of computer error if its automated. I guess it all comes down to what people what to risk tbh. A fault in the machine, or the driver(s)?

I can't see anything like this being rolled out for a very long time until it's almost flawless tbh.

You believe in computer errors?

Who writes computer code? Where does the error really lie?

We have adequate systems for acceptable automated travel. Look at the air industry, redundant systems built on solid logic. In 1969 we put men on the moon with a control computer far less powerful than what we have in our current mobiles phones. It had fairly crude testing methodologies by today's standards too, MBTF, where as today we have intelligent logic and predictive error handling.

You are right though, it would be a long time before we saw anything like an automated highway system. One hurdle would be the cost/infrastructure required. A big hurdle would be the adoption and change in norms for people.

FIRESALE?

Really though, I love the idea as a geek and would love to be here to see the day.

As a V8 loving, petrol head? I hate the thought of it and actually sickens me ever so slightly seeing how much we are losing cars these days. But on a flip side, track days should get cheaper and more should open up.
