When will people realise Google aren't the internet gods everyone thinks they are? They don't make money, full stop. They are going to have to make huge changes to their business model if they want to be around in five years.

iirc, they arnt loosing any money on that settlement, they are just giving $90mil in credit. which i cannot imagine is that big a splash in the total amount of credit floating around.

I don't get it. They made $6.1 billion last year.

Google dont make money eh?

Then I wonder how they seem to be one of the best performing companies on the stock exchange, and they even seems to have MS/Yahoo/AOL ever so slighly trembling with fear.

Because they are hilariously overvalued. All they have is AdWords.

They have quite a good strategy for the future though - namely there entry to the hardware market (Google Cubes) and when coupled with DarkWeb they'll be able to offer VOIP, TV over IP. Should put them in a good market position.

I don't think they are overvalued - Marketting is worth a lot of money, particularly well targeted unobtrusive (sp?) marketting such as Google's.

i doubt it, but looking at the google share prices and their profits, I think a lot of their value stems from the strength of google the brand, and therefore the potential for 'google' products beyond advertising.

If a crash in their stock price means they have to re-think their strategy and services then this can only be good because the whole "make a fanfare then limit the signups, or have the system crash because we're cheapskates, but we can put out a nice bit of PR because we're Google" attitude is failing now.

Infact, in their latest release today - a buy-out of Writely - they disabled new signups before it hit the press, I suspect to avoid all the above criticism.

Regarding Adwords, it is a very good tool, and online advertising spending is only just beginning to increase.

MSN have released their ad-centre into beta but I don't have a link, however I do rememebr some screenshots and it certainly looks very competitive, with comprehensive graphical breakdowns of search string popularity and demographics, something I'd like to see from Google :)

"We do not know how many will apply and receive credits, but under the agreement, the total amount of credits, plus attorneys fees, will not exceed 90 million dollars," said Google Associate General Counsel Nicole Wong.

and believe that this settlement is further proof of our willingness to work together with advertisers to reimburse invalid clicks."

Erm...they made 1.5 billion dollars profit last year, up from 400 million the year before that....i struggle to see how you can say 'They dont make money, full stop'.

They DO. Full stop.

They make an absolute killing through AdWords. Just look at the number of websites running AdSense, the thousands of clicks these ads get every second and the cut Google take from each of those clicks. They make an absolute killing.

google make Billions and google are overvalued  so everybody is wrong but you are right......i like how you think
