bit of a long shot but does anyone know how this is generated? is it linked to cookies?

I can't see why it would be. ad_client is a permanent indentifier assigned to your user account when you sign up to Adsense, rather than on a session basis.

Perhaps an incrementing number after the 'pub-' or a concatenation of various values (locale, user id etc.). No idea specifically how it's generated; not sure why it would be of benefit to know.
