Googles data centre

When you spend half you life in a DC it's not that impressive, until you consider it's all one company. That's the wow factor for me.

When you have a DC filled with random customers, random bits of kit its never going to look as impressive as the same machine x 10,000 etc... all cabled in the same tidy fashion.

Like it.

This is what guards my data centre

Mentioned in the GD version of this thread, but:

How does one go about keeping track of this servers etc...? And all the switches as well.

This is why I want to try and get into network engineering. I would love to one day (and I'm thinking decades of experience down the line) design, implement and manage a place like that from start to finish.

Different ways but many companies use asset tags which have barcodes on. You simply scan the code into a database. Then there is asset/inventory management platforms that combine various databases. For example, I once used some software that showed a graphical display of a 42/47u rack and you add the devices into specific U positions. Once in production you can click on the switch and it gives you the exact location, serial number etc. You can even build the physical connections beween devices and create an install package for the installation guys.
