Gooligan - android google account breach

Thanks for the info. I wasn't breached, I hope I don't get spam from using the checker lol. I recommend using a password manager to make using a super long complex password more managable and 2FA.

@AHarvey

"9% of the 1 million breached accounts are European accounts."

I understand the breach affects 3 million Android users.

In my view, Gooligan is only possible due to the fragmentation of Android. Google's inability to update some Android phones with the latest security improvements is a problem they can only fix by making Android proprietary.

The fact that Android Nougat is not widely available on Android phones is proof that the OEMs and Operators that work with Google have little incentive to update Android. The only way for users to be sure to get the latest software is to buy a new device.

If Google does take control of Android by migrating the Android Run Time from the Android Open Source Package into the proprietary Google Mobile Services, it would allow them to roll all software updates into Google Play Store. However this would mean that OEMs would have less flexibility in optimising the software to their particular hardware, meaning greater commoditisation.

I would not be surprised that Gooligan is one of the reasons Google uses to announce such a change in 2017. Google has begun building hardware itself (eg Pixel phones) and I see that OEMs will have little option but to agree to such a change in the Open Source Android world.

Its the only way. Most OEMs are not updating most of their phone. Most Android phones never get any updates.
In that respect, Windows Phone, and IOS were much better. My Moto G4 is still on a patch from May. My battered old windows phone got an update in Nov.
