So I was looking at the GoPro Hero 3 HD Black edition and it just seems ridiculously expensive for what it is.

I really just want decent 1080p video that I can play back on the TV and upload to youtube so should I get a Hero 2 of some description instead and save a bucket of cash?

What are the other options? I see there's a Sony HDR-AS15 but mounting options for it look limited and/or pretty rubbish unless I'm looking in the wrong places?

Advice much appreciated!

Are you looking specifically for an action sports camera though?
You haven't made that clear, or are you just looking for something that shoots 1080p?

There is nothing wrong with the Hero2, I've used it extensively.

What the Hero3 Black offers is better image quality due to a new sensor, along with higher resolutions and more frame rate options. It's also a bit smaller, but this isn't necessarily a positive, as the battery life isn't as good as the Hero1 & Hero2.

I need a camera to fix to my hang glider so it'll only be used in the daytime. I think the 3 has a better sensor for darker scenes but I think that won't really be needed.

Is the extra cash for 60fps 1080p on the 3 really worth it over 30fps on the 2? Due to the nature of what I'll be doing, there'll be a fair amount of panning going on rather than in your face action. I'm a bit worried about it looking "juddery" if you know what I mean.

There is a difference in smoothness between 30p and 60p. During mountain biking and snowboarding I can certainly see what a difference it makes because its obviously subject to quite a lot of vibration.

I've never done hand gliding, so I have no idea how that compares. I assume its quite smooth unless you are getting buffeted by wind and turbulence?

You do though have to bare in mind that shooting 1080p, especially at higher frame rates uses more power and storage space. I've typically always shot using 720p. You will also find that different resolutions change the viewing angle, so its something to bare in mind based on how much you want to see.

I tend to notice on DVD/BluRay that slow pans tend to judder at normal frame rates hence the concerns. Yes, it'll mostly be smooth. Good point by the way, 720p@60fps should do the job just fine.

That settles it, I'll get the Hero2. Thanks :)
