Current specs are;

i5 4690K @ 4.6Ghz
8 GB DDR3 2400Mhz
Antec TruePower 550w '80w Gold' PSU
GTX 970
LG 24GM77 Monitor.

I want to step into the world of 1440p. So I'm looking to upgrade my graphics card and monitor.

For that budget, what would you recommend?

1440p and 144hz required.

I don't play games on Ultra, I normally lower graphics as I generally favour FPS rather than eye candy.

Sounds like the budget would be enough for a GTX 1080 and the kind of monitor you're looking for, although if you want GSync you'd probably need to drop to GTX 1070. Likewise if you might want to think about upgrading to a Core i7 if you want your system to last longer.
 
Eizo supposedly make the best 2560x1440 monitor, but maybe the money might be better spent elsewhere.

Go Gsync 1440p for sure and run it with your 970 until you can get a 1080/1080Ti. Gsync definitely help to extend your gfx cards lifetime imo (due to you, the user, being able to tolerate more fps dips)
 
Once you make Gsync a requirement the chances of buying a pile of dung become huge. Plus you'd be looking at locking the refresh rate to sub 60-75Hz with the GTX970 anyway. I'd say defiantly don't go Gsync.
 
So what monitors would you recommend?

I mainly play competitive FPS games and is Gsync really needed?

Also wouldn't a 1070 and 1440p 144hz monitor work well?
 
Gsync is locked to the graphics card frame rate so if you are getting 40 FPS the monitor is refreshing at a painful 40Hz. It's pretty much unless for your needs unless you want to spend another £2000 upgrading the rest of the system so you can hold 150.

The Eizo is meant to be the best 2560x1440 144Hz monitor. If money no object ultra high performance gaming is what you're after that's the way to go.

It might be worth holding off until after the Vega card is launched to see what the Freesync 2 monitors offer.
 
To make use of the performance on offer with a GTX1080 you'd need more than a 4.6Ghz i5 with 8Gb of 2400Mhz memory. Plus with Nvidia you have the DX12 and Vulcan problems.

The OP would be better waiting for Vega if looking to upgrade the graphics card.
 
His i5 4690K @ 4.6Ghz is more than up to the job combined with a GTX1080 @1440p he will see a massive increase in performance while gaming:)
