Got a 42" hole in my life

So my trusty Panasonic TXP 42G10 is slowly dying, well the remote is so obviously that means buying a new tv as £30 on a Panny remote is far too much hassle.
Any thoughts on a similar sized set I can replace it with.

The alcove the set sits in is about 1000mm across so by my reconning and from a small bit of research I could get 50" in there.

So, ideas on anything 42" and over but no bigger than 50" assuming that is the largest screen size I can fit in there would be grand.
Budget wise lets say up to £750/800 I recon I could get something decent in that bracket.

Buy a universal remote and wait it out for OLED to come in at decent prices? Or take advantage of the fairly low pricing of UHD TV's right now although BLB would annoy me.

Missing bloke logic here to justify new TV purchase
Correct

It's a model from 2009, I'd suggest he probably wants a new TV anyway!
Also correct.
Don't get me wrong it's decent enough and if I can bung it on gumtree and £100 for it (maybe at a push) it will serve someone well (with a new remote) but I'm after an update so it's going.

This is a valid point. OLED is a draw for me but prices prohibit. What timescales can expect them to be below 1k at this size, another year? 2?

I'd say a year for a 42", the problem is coming from a plasma you will notice the blacks not being so deep on these LED/IPS screens, I got myself a VA panel over 6 years ago which I prefer to recent IPS because of the BLB. You could always get a cheap 1080p TV for now and then upgrade when you see a awesome OLED/UHD TV come out and not feel to bad.

you can still get Pan 50" dx802 for ~£700, which have a nice VA panel - would be my current choice at that budget.

Although, in the spirit of the original post , in the sub-oled'ish category saw Currys are charging an excessive £1500 for planet EarthII, and they
throw in a 4kUHD player and bonus of a Samsung QLED, can't give them away, so these ks7000 replacement will soon be <£1K
Curry's don't seem to be doing trade-in any more, but they would probably want a working remote.

No price/release of the LG a7 1080p oled either, which could be good <=50".
