Hello all,

I've got a bit of a upgrade itch and currently have the following spec pc

5800x
B550 strix
16gb 4400mhz
Rtx 3080
1tb sn550
1tb sad
Ek 240aio
Lian li air mini
Bequiet lightwings

I was thinking about moving to am5 but seen a YouTuber say he did that and regrets not just getting a 5800x3d as the outlay is so high compared to the performance increase.

So with a 5800x currently, would a move to a x3d be worthwhile to keep my am4 platform for a little longer before doing a whole rebuild?

Pc is used for gaming at 1440 270hz

I'm not sure you'd see a huge difference, maybe the lows, smoother experience. If you had a 4080 it might be more justifiable. A GPU upgrade is likely to be a lot more noticeable but only if you're currently struggling for FPS. Tbh there's not much worth upgrading for unless you have a specific game in mind?

I presume you're not running that RAM at 4400MHz?

No not really, looking forward to avatar and tempest rising, nothing drastic, it's just that itch

May get a nv5, glacier 360 and some fans instead

Regarding the ram, I believe it's set to XMP, I'm not really sure

Would stick with what you have, if had to do one upgrade, GPU upgrade would be more noticeable but anything worthwhile upgrading from the 3080 is really poorly priced

And upgrading platform while still using the 3080 isn't worth it imo unless you doing other then gaming

Would try to wait it out and see what next gen brings

I’ve got a 5800X + 3080 and toyed with the idea of an upgrade however after looking into it I’ve decided to wait for zen 5 / arrow lake as I don’t think a 5800X3D is enough of an upgrade while Zen 4 also isn’t enough when considering the higher outlay so hopefully the next gen CPUs will offer a more worthwhile upgrade for the money.

Again with GPUs the only ones worth upgrading to from a 3080 is the 7900XTX, 4080 or 4090 but I refuse to validate Nvidia’s huge 70% price increase on the 4080 which uses a smaller die than a 3060ti while AMDs 7900XTX isn’t much better, maybe if Nvidia drops a 4080ti on the AD102 next year for a similar price of the 4080 will I be interested but by then we are getting close to next gen.

Looks as if you’d gain 10-15% sometimes as much as 30% but only a few games. Is the cost of the upgrade it worth?

The 7800X3D is another league, but also a lot more money.

The 5800X3D is surprisingly close, I hadn't realised quite how well that chip does. The recent Gamersnexus benches showed it in a very good light.

my rigs pretty close to yours 5900x/3090 & 1440p is no issue right now

i want to upgrade too but theirs very little point :(

I really do fancy a NV5, and I've seen the SN850x 2tb for £134, so looking into that, that's a worthwhile buy, as it's then transferred over to the new build in the future.

Will my b550 strix-F be able to use the full speed of this drive? I will then retire my 1tb qvo in favour of my sn550

I think it depends on what it costs to upgrade. 5900 to 7950X3D cost me £300, thanks to the MM. CPU, memory and motherboard. It was a noticeable improvement in everything and certainly a worth while for £300. I was lucky in buying and selling at the time. How much will it cost to upgrade your GPU? Waiting will devalue your equipment.

Well I worked out £790 for a 7800x3d b650 carbon, 32gb ddr5 6000mhz C30

Not a clue what my current hardware would be worth on the MM

GPU wise I'm not sure, after looking at benchmarks I can't see what I would move to for a decent uplift that at least is worth the outlay

Sadly a decent uplift in the GPU department is going to cost the tick end of £1k. I'd wait and see what the Super refresh brings but that will probably just increase the prices. I'd just sit on your 3080 until a decent value option comes up. Always the occasional "Gibbo Special" ;) @Gibbo

That's what I'm thinking GPU wise, I may make the jump to AM5 depending on what my current hardware would get me to lower the cost.

Made a few Searches and managed to bring it down to £750 at the moment, could shave a bit more dropping to a tomahawk over the carbon board

Yes I'd look hard at exactly what features you need. I bought an X570 Aorus Master, lovely board but hardly used any of the features, this time I got a B650 Gaming X AX. Does the job for what I need.

I mean as long as I can use my other components without being held back, WiFi I don't need as I run cable anyway.

I'm going to be honest, a lot of the motherboard features I don't really understand, once the pc is setup and fine tuned I leave it alone.

I feel the carbon is just another £45 for a nicer looking? I'm not sure

A lot are sold on VRM performance these days. Unless you are going to be using a 16 core maxed out over prolonged periods it's not really a factor. PCIE 5 is not really a thing now and by the time it is it will be probably time for a new board anyway. I look to see if it has at least 3 x NVME, a reasonable number of USB ports, I have Wi-Fi just because I'm in a room atm with no hard wired connection but will be moving the PC at some point. Most have some sort of BIOS update feature so you can flash your BIOS without a CPU. If you list the features you need I'm sure there will be some good suggestions for boards that would suit you. If you don't understand them you probably don't need them ;)

So I plan on pairing it with a 7800x3d, 6000mhz cl36 ram, sn850x and a sn550
I'm assuming the ethernet port don't matter? I have virgin media 1gig fibre, sound also don't matter as I use a sound blaster G6, so just a nice looking functional really with a good amount of USB ports on the rear

Completely depends on what games and resolution you play at. I'm in the same boat. 5800x + 3080. I'm more likely to do GPU before CPU as I play at 1440p and potentially soon, 4K. I don't really play any games that are CPU intensive, so wouldn't be any point in changing. Will wait for another AM5 generation before I even consider it.

I know some prefer Intel, I have a Realtek 2.5Gbps that seems fine, it's all much of a muchness I think. I'd make a list of the features you want and then find the cheapest board you like that has those. Do a quick check online for a review to make sure there's no obvious issue with it and then buy it :)

you could get the msi x670e tomahawk for £250 with cashback from MSI personally I wouldnt bother changing platform just save that money, I've also had that itch so looked around but really doesnt make any sense, I currently have 5800x3d (found it on offer while ago at £250 and dropped it in current am4 build paired with the 3080 play at 1440p, only gpu uplift I would go from it are the 4080/7900xtx but they are well over priced also helps I dont game much anymore and happy to keep going with the 3080 at 1440p
