Hi.

So yea, I've got an interview at Network Rail for an NDS 24/7 Operative and it sounds a lot more varied and potentially more challenging than my current role which is all brilliant.

I want to do my best as the salary hike for me is excellent!

I'm not sure as to how complex this interview will be, it's a 1 hour interview, 15 minutes numeracy/literacy and I'm not sure exactly what these tests will include? The questions they'll ask I'm not sure.

I don't know what I should swat up on Network Rail, I can memorise facts such as the rail network is twice as small as it was in the 1920's but has twice as many passengers so this is one of the challenges network rail faces these days, but I'm not sure what else apart from these facts I should learn.

It's in York, I've moved to to York from Manchester, took a large pay cut, suffering, and now looking at a large pay rise for me if I get this job.

I'm coming to OcUK as you've helped me (and laughed at me) in the past so I'm calling for help again.

**Edit - sorry didn't notice this new section of OcUK! **

Ah thanks.

I'm not sure how technical this interview will be, I've had no online assessment or video interview or phone interview, looking online the gist I got was most advice was for graduate and high level jobs.

Just google'd and read through the job description. Basic CS skills, data entry, good telephone manner and time keeping skills.

Can't see what's hard about that. Basically they want to ensure you're not a complete idiot and had to word (in a round about way) the job ad as such.

Numeracy and literacy test, ensuring you can do basic maths and your reports make sense. Funnily enough, that's actually a rare skill.

Other than that, there's no way to specifically prepare for that interview apart from remembering some basic interview skills.

Good luck with the interview. I work for Network Rail also in York incidentally, but can't really help you on the interview side of things as (I never interviewed as I transferred over from another company under TUPE arrangements)

They're a great company to work for though, plenty of opportunities for career progression and development if you show aptitude and willing.

Any questions etc feel free to send me a PM and Ill be happy to try and help.

Well thanks for the tips guys, I got the job!.

I am worried slightly about the 6 months contract that it I could need to job hunt again 6 months down the line, the guy interviewing me told me I'd know earlier, like 4 months.

I'd hope that I'd be able to find another job in Network Rail, or maybe they'd offer other opportunities?

It's a shame they don't do any rail travel discounts :(

ChrisUK1983 small world eh, I'm going to be in the Holgate depot if you know that place?

Congratulations. The current vacancy list is pretty big at the minute so I'm sure you'll be able to find something else pretty quickly.

I do know Holgate depot yes, Im based over the road in Leeman Road depot.

With regards to rail travel, Id double check. I know I'm entitled to 75% off a season ticket. Id assume you'd get the same. I thought it was a company wide offer.

Thanks, well that's a good thing if there is loads of jobs going.

I was told about the offer but apparently it's for work purposes only, so if I lvied in Selby and commuted to York I'd get the 75% discount.

Ah I see, its not something I've ever looked into. My use of trains is very very low so its never held any appeal for me.

Yeah you'll soon get into the habit of checking the vacancy list first thing every morning like everyone else seems to do :)
