Got a MacBook Pro ... problems :(

I recently had a MacBook Pro custom built and shipped from the US (15", 2G RAM, 2.16 GHz, 256 GFX mem). I have to say that I love OS X - it's so simple to use. Anyway, I've come across some problems :(.

Problem 1

When I play a DVD (either with the remote or just straight off the desktop), the laptop will freeze. This won't happen straight away and the movie will continue to play, it just freezes when you return to the laptop and 'wake it up' (e.g. when the credits are playing). The mouse won't move on the screen and it wont respond to forced quit - the only thing to do is just hold down the power button. Thinking it was a temp thing, I downloaded the temp monitor app - cores are at 60 and 62C when the movie is playing. This is hot, but I wouldn't have thought it was causing it to freeze !

Problem 2

I originally noticed this in firefox and thought it was simply an issue with that, but it's happened in spotlight as well. When you type, the cursor will gradually move further and further backwards through the letter you are typing until you are typing in a jumble of letters on top of each other. This happens in firefox all the time but I've only seen it in the OS once. This happens when firefox displays text (like this post) but also, any links in the text will end a few characters from where they should and the text will run off the screen (although that's a separate issue). I'm a picture of the problem - see where is says OpenOffice for text on text (top line for links finishing early and right for text running off screen).

Basically, I'm new to Macs and have no idea what's going on here. Any ideas would be REALLY appreciated :). Thanks guys.

Get everything important off the hard drive and nuke it.

A fresh install of Tiger might sort things out.

I took it to the mac shop in Leeds to see what they thought. The manager is keeping it in to do a complete format and re-install - he'll even watch a few films on it to test it  ;) !

Thanks for the ideas about the browsers - safari is nice, I just prefer the extensions you can use with firefox (e.g. foxytunes, the imageshack right-click add-on etc). I've never used camino really, so I'll check that out.
