So I had a R9 290 in my PC the fans span up and I restarted it from a black locked screen then on restart I had artifacts all over it. I thought my GPU was dead so went and brought a R9 Fury which wouldn't start and would just spin the fans with a black screen, I thought maybe my PCI-E was dead however I brought a HD 6670 off the MM and find that it actually works? What gives? I need to upgrade the card obviously but now I don't know where I stand :/

Have you got the latest motherboard bios? This can be a classic symptom of a incompatible bios especially as you have a Gigabyte Z77 board which seem to suffer from this more than any others. Usually updating to the latest motherboard bios fixes this.
