All the parts came for my new build today. The only things I'm keeping from the old one are the ssd and psu. Now, what happens with windows when I switch the ssd to the new mobo? Can't find a solid answer online. Some say you might have to reinstall others say it will just need reactivating. In either case am I fine just plugging the ssd into the new setup and seeing what happens?

Cheers

It's kind of a catch 22. It SHOULD work with windows on it however you really should be doing fresh windows with a fresh build because it's going to have so many driver conflicts across the board.

Think about it that OS has been set up for your old system in the registry/installs/software/drivers and such. There is no easy way to get this back to it's fresh state so a fresh install really is ideal just to stop any possible conflicts.

Depends on the OS...

Windows 8.1/10 - Should work no problem
Windows 7 - Might work

You'll likely need to activate Windows again.

As above though - Fresh install is always preferred if you can. Driver conflicts won't be an issue.

So I just did the above. It kept getting to around 70% and then it would throw up an error. I tried it a handful of times and it appears that it's partially wiped the drive as it's now saying there's no os detected. It says this everytime I turn it on -

"An operating system wasn't found. Try disconnecting any drives that don't contain an operating system. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart."

If I hook up my dvd drive and put the windows installation disk in will that rectify everything? As in, I can just reinstall windows from disk?

Thanks.
