Hi guys,

My brother has recently upgraded again and I got his i5 2500 from it. (It's not a K Version though)

Few questions,

I recently was running an i3 2120, I installed the i5 and just booted up my PC as normal. Would it be advisable to do a system format or anything?

Is their a big difference between the i3 2120 and the i5 2500?

What are normal temps for the i5 2500 on a stock cooler?

In computer properties it says 3.30GHz and then 3.70Ghz... Is the latter turbo boost?

Can the 2500 version be overclocked even if it's just by a little bit?

Cheers guys

Why format? It's just a new CPU, no drivers or anything. The 2500 will be superior of course, but it depends if you use applications which make use of it. The 3.3 to 3.7 jump is turbo boost and you can overclock the CPU via BCLK but it's not worth it for a 100-200mhz boost.

Cheers guys - Would I likely notice a performance increase in games or probabaly not? I just loaded up some tribes ascended and to be honest from the i3 to the 2500 I really dont notice much difference at all.

The FPS is a bit more consistent but I wouldn't say it was much higher...

Cheers

No you won't notice much difference. The real benefits on the 2500 come from the k version when overclocked to 4ghz+

For free you can't complain though and in games that take advantage of more cores like BF3 you should notice it helps on 64 player multiplayer maps.

Depending on the game I would say. For example my friend who got a i3 2120 and a GTX560Ti overclocked to 950MHz...on 0xMSAA, the CPU would bit a slight bottleneck on multiplayer with all 4 threads on 100% load (2 cores, 2 Hyper-thread) while the GPU usage is only around 70~80% despite the frame rate is lower than 60fps cap I set for him. For situation such as that, I would think the 2 extra cores on the i5 2500 would definitely help, and increase the gpu usage thus increase frame rate.

With that said, if the games wasn't well-optimised for using 4 cores or more...say if it was a 2 cores game, the i5 2500 would be pretty much no faster than the i3 2120.
