Got another Switch - HELP!

Here's the scenario:
  • Got the kids a Switch OLED for Christmas (they're 7 and 4)
  • Setup a single Nintendo Online account under my email address
  • Daughter plays Animal Crossing (physical copy) and son plays Mario Kart (physical copy)
  • Due to never-ending arguments about who plays when, we bought daughter a Switch Lite for her birthday this week and linked to the existing Nintendo account
Then the problems began...
  • Had to use Animal Crossing island migration tool to 'move' her Animal Crossing island to her Switch Lite which worked fine
  • Now when she plays AC on the Lite, son can't play Mario Kart on the OLED at the same time as they're sharing a single Nintendo account - one or other of them gets a message saying they can't continue playing
  • I created a kids sub-account for my daughter under my Nintendo account and signed that into the Lite, but she can't use her old Animal Crossing island she's been building for 6 months as it's under the main account
  • Signed her back into the main Nintendo account on the Lite and created another kids sub-account on the OLED for son, but that means Mario Kart is back to the beginning now and it won't let him play the extra courses we got as part of the expansion pack as that was paid for under the main Nintendo account!!
So I'm a bit lost - back in my gaming days with the good old N64 I didn't need any of these online accounts!! The aim is for them both to be able to play their games at the same time without losing 6 months of Animal Crossing island building or the extra courses I paid for in Mario Kart. I've been all over Nintendo forums and it's baffling - it seems I should have set them up their own accounts on day one of the OLED at Christmas but I didn't realise that and it seems one or other of them is stuffed now

Any ideas?

Wish I could help, sounds confusing ! Probably hard to undo these issues now, but should have given each of your children a separate profile under your account. That way, save game data etc would be atributed to the individual not just the console. Perhaps try to give them separate profiles now ? ( shouldn't be an issue for your daughter really, since she has her own Lite, but it might solve your son's situation ). Do you have a Nintendo online account btw ? I understand the family version can help solve some of these types of problems, as it allows multiple users on a single account to play simultaneously.

Yeah I realise now I should have created them a kids account each under my main account on day 1 as I said in the original post. And yes I do have a Nintendo online account as above.

Very frustrating that you can't move save data or things you've bought between the accounts though - especially since they're sub-accounts for the kids under my main account

You can if each person has a separate profile. I'd suggest trying that for your son, then get him to play a bit on Mario Kart before saving the game under his profile ID. Hopefully that will allow him to play at the same time as your daughter. The only game that makes transferring data etc really difficult is Animal Crossing, but you've resolved that with the transfer tool.

He has a separate kids account now under my main one, but it means Mario Kart is back to the beginning so he's lost all the extra cars etc. that he's gained. Worse, it won't let him play the additional tracks I paid for with the expansion pack as that's under my main account - I would have thought it would allow sub-users under the main account to do this but apparently not.

If you have a family sub for Nintendo online then it does share the dlc for Mario Kart, AC etc.

Any idea how? When he plays Mario Kart under his new sub-login the new courses aren't available, saying we have to pay. When I go to the Nintendo shop from his new sub-login on the OLED and search for the Mario Kart Expansion Pack again it says we have to pay. If we play Mario under the original login the additional courses are there.

Just confirming you have a family membership which is linked to their profiles right?

Yeah I have the main account I setup when we got the OLED, which I bought the Expansion Pack under, and I've now set them each up a sub-account under the main account using the Family thing.

When he plays Mario Kart under the original main account the additional courses are there. When he plays under his new kids account (under my main account) they're not, and when going to the online under his sub-account it only gives the option to pay for the Expansion Pack.

That's odd, I don't have the expansion pak anymore but when I did my mum was on my family account and was able to play the additional MK tracks no problem. Sorry I can't help

Family Group (which you have set up) and Family Membership are two different things - you need to purchase Family Membership to share the DLC - see link and scroll down:
