Hi OC forums – first time poster :)

I’ve been deciding to build a new machine over the last few weeks and have picked up a few bargains 2nd hand.
I now have a Core 2 Duo E6400 with Zalman cooler & a XFX 7900GTX. I’m pairing this with a Seagate SATA2 16MB drive and a lightscribe NEC Burner. I have a case and a branded Qtec 450w PSU. I’m using a 15” Belina TFT and I wont be able to upgrade that till after my wedding at Christmas. Oh did I mention that this is a stealth upgrade so the outside of the PC can’t look any different. The missus cannot know!

Originally I had been thinking of getting an SLI system, perhaps the P5N32-SLI SE but mates have been putting me off as its nforce 4 and old tech. The reality is I’ll probably only be upgrading next year to a cheapo 19” so wont even be powering any high resolution monitors or HD panels so would I be wise forgetting SLI? I can’t find a mono that is 2x16 in sli mode anyway

The main game I will be playing is Enemy Territory: Quake Wars released early next year, It was demo’d on at games convention on Pentium d950 Dual Core 3.4GHz 800MHz FSB / 2GB DDR @667MHz / 7800GT so I think the processor & Card will be upto scratch?

I only really have about £200/250 to play with for a motherboard and a gig of ram, and I’ll add another gig after the wedding. What would you recommend, ideally available from the OC website & overclockable. Also will the PSU suffice? I can hold off a month and raise a little more funds but im sick of being without a desktop and even sicker of researching. I just want an easy to overclock motherboard and someone to tell me that I don’t need to worry about SLI!

Ive looked at reviews for the Gigabye D range and the abit Max mobo but am tired of thinking about it - HELP!

dont worry about SLI , especially on a 15" screen- your get little to no gain....
As for the PSU, get rid of it! Qtecs are utter rubbish and you are likely to damage your components. Try something like a tagan or seasonic. Ill have a go at specing you something for your budget...

The Boards very overclockable, if you can afford the extra, try and get the ultra low latency geil ram as it will clock better. The PSU can be changed but i was trying to stay in budget for you

I could stretch to £300 when my old parts sell on ebay. (or i manage the credit card ppl to give me an upgrade) So get a single GB of the low latecy Geil and a decent psu, forget about the SLI and i'll be a happy camper. Thanks Ender

No don't get rid of the QTec, look at the destruction you can cause with it...

:D

for the saftey of you, your missus and your neighbours, your neighbours neighbours, call out the bomb squad to remove that q'tec for you.

Get rid of that asap mate.

As for memory i would suggest 2gb not the 1gb if you can afford it.

lol!

The Qtec served me proud for a year with an Athlon xp 3000/2gb ddr 400/BFG 6800GT but i knew it wasnt a 'enthuaist' PSU.

Im sure someone somewhere will take it off my hands!

Really? Fair enough :D
I understand that they are cheap PSU's therefore I'd expect them to blow. This doesn't really bother me. What bothers me is that they can take the rest of your system out when they do blow because they have no form of protection on them, which I think they should make compulsory for every PSU no matter how cheap it is!

OK have access to a few more £££

Is there a Mobo out there that has 2x 16 SLI (has to be nvidia) and support for the Quatro Core? - i want to buy a mobo that will do me 2/3 years now then upgrade my screen to something fancy next year.

Also, does Dx10 affect mobo's?

Asus P5N32-SLI SE Deluxe NForce 4 IIRC. 140 odd quid though! Also don't think it supports upcoming quad core.
As for DX10 affecting MB's, I'm not sure TBH? I wouldn't have thought so.

Why does the Asus P5W DH Deluxe WiFi only support xfire? if it had SLI too that would so nicely! this is frustrating!

Yeh shame that.
I'm sure I read in last months Custom PC that Foxconn were releasing Core 2 version of their AM2 Nforce 590 SLI. Not heard anything on it since though

will be replacing my monitor next year for a nice big 20" panel, i want to get a mobo that i wont have to replace for 2/3 years - so quatro support & Sli 2x16 would be ideal. should i hold off a while longer as they dont seem to exist?

Simple answer is licensing fee's and NVidia not wanting it on systems that can use Crossfire. Or that is my opinion of it.

My Epox 9NPA+SLI happily runs my HIS1900XT, two would be nicer. Not that I need one. Yet.

Hi guys - bit of an update. I have managed to wise up and realise i'll never need SLI and have decided to order the following (once i get through to the bank and get some extra funds on my Credit Card)

Hiper HPU-4B580 Type R 580W Modular ATX2.2 PSU - Blue (CA-006-HP £54.99
MB-061-GI Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £91.99
MY-058-GL GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC) £173.99
CA-089-CM CoolerMaster Ammo 533 Aluminum (No PSU) - Silver £41.95

And paring the above with my e6400, 7900GTX, 200gb sata2 drive.

Questions:
1. Is that PSU up for the job? - i looks nice it to me.

2. Whats the difference between the Ds3 & Ds4?
the 2nd PCIe slot that runs at x4?

3. Can i have someones msn for when im ready to o/c  Only joking i'll have a thorough read of the ds3 thread.
