I currently have a AMD FX8320BE, 8GB, and a GTX970 4GB.

Got hold of a i7 5930k with X99 sabretooth motherboard, 32GB DDR4 ram and GTX980.

So basically I keep one and sell the other.
I don't know if I need a 5930k/sabretooth/32GB DDR4 combo and I can get quite a bit of money for it.

I do plan on getting Occulus or Vive so the build will be for that.

Definitely keeping the GTX980 though.

So question is how much benefit will the CPU upgrade be now and in the next couple years, especially for VR gaming?

'Got hold of' ?

You bought it or found it lol

The 5930k machine is very powerful and will sort you out for a few years, unless you need the money then keep it and enjoy some stress free smooth gaming for a few years. I would then just sell your AMD system for a bit of cash to put towards your Vive or Occulus.

Work in IT, we offer recycling services and every now and again we get something quite high end mixed in with all the hp and dell workstations.
So technically it was bought to sell on. But its very tempting to keep.

Pretty much this, all depends on the value to you vs the value of the cash. ;)
