Looking to build a 2nd rig in socket 939, I we be doing some overclocking I have the choices one of three cpu's. What do I go for?
  • AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4800+ (Socket 939) - Retail (ADA4800CDBOX) (CP-129-AM)
  • AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core FX60 (Socket 939) - Retail (ADAFX60DAA6CDBOX) (CP-146-AM)
  • AMD Opteron UP 180 Dual Core San Diego 2.4GHz 2MB Cache (Socket 939) - Retail (CP-154-AM)
finally I have seen this somewhere else
  • AMD Opteron 64 180 Socket939 , Denmark Core, 2x 2.4GHz , 2MB Cache, Retail

obviously the fx60, the others have the multi locked up and it doesnt have a generic feel to it either.

Tbh, i would go for am2, no point in going for an old platform, the top of the range msi/asus along with some corsair c3 and an fx62. should be faster and more upgradable too.

Sorry no AM2, not until it matures a bit, and I want to run a DFI Board, i managed to get my 4400 @ 2.64 on a DFI. I prefer not to go back to Asus or MSI. My old board was a Asus SLI Premium, the max o/c I got on that was 2.4, not to say their rubbish.

I really would go for an opty 170, or FX60 because of the unlocked multi. tbh you will probably get the same oc out of the 4800+/opty 180 than you will from the 170.

agreed,

anything higher than a opty 170 is waste,
anything higher than a 4400 x 2 is a waste.

And the FX 60 is just a rip off.

Got my opty 170 running 2.8ghz on 1.36v great chip :D

mmm the 4800 is possible or the Opty 180, mind u the FX60 is only another £30 quid extra on top the opty from another seller, whats the difference between the SD Core and the Denmark???

I take it you mean the toledo & denmark cores? They're essentially the same, but you'd honestly be better going for the opty 170 and clocking it.

why get the 4800 ?

it will not clock higher than a 4400 it doesn't work that way!

it actually may - the more expensive chips get the better mem controllers (in general) and have a higher multi

it *may* do, but they're all opterons, they have pretty much the best anyway. Is there really much of a difference in how the various models of opteron clock?

i wasnt talking about opterons though - there a different ball game

You will not get better advice than that :)
