So I got a compaq (22uish I think) server rack from an auction site for a tenner!!

It's not the best looking rack ever made but I like it especially as I got it for a tenner and the only thing that is wrong with it is the handle I think but that will be easily be prepared. I've got a few thinkgs I think I will be putting in it as this is a project I've been wanting to do for quite a while. I want to have a file server and I have a few in mind, a switch 48port of course for 5 comps just because they are dirt cheap, a rack mount audio switch with amp and a patch panel. I want a case which I can mount up to 16 drives in it what would people suggest? And what other things do you think I should be putting in here!? Serious suggestions!

PS: could someone tell me wether a Cisco Catalyst 2948G switch is manned or un-manned please I can't find it anywhere! Thanks

Think that switch is managed.

As for 16 drive case, good luck. 6 or 8 you'd be on a good run. Just google around for rack mountable cases there are a few reasonable ones but nothing you'd ever use in an enterprise situation.

Might want to get a PDU for it.

Id get on ebay and have a look for some old Dell or HP servers. Power consumption will be high though...

Nice one thanks I will be using that store! What do you have in your rack? I might have to start the show me your racks thread again!

I got it from ebay (dunno wether i'm supposed to put that please advise!). The first one on there for a long time that has gone for such a low price!

I have a 4U server, 16 port gigabit switch (Blue Netgear) A tray for router / firewall, 2 16 port patch panels, My UPS (350W APC from OcUK) and a lot of cables! When I finally move, it will also host my Vonage boxes, Cable Modem (These are both in a different room at the moment due to the flat layout - cba to move modem, and run additional network cables).

There is a show us your racks thread in ent & servers but it's full of some very serious kit!

All I have in mine is a 4u server, need to finish that project, might buy a cisco router to refresh my CCNA skills.

i just have a basic rack that i use, i think its about 12u

it has 4 1u servers running with via epias (pfSense Router + 3 FreeBSD)
2u MythTV Backend and Media Server
APC rackmount UPS
8 Port D-Link Rackmount KVM
32 Port D-Link Gigabit smart switch
24 port Patch Panel with cat 6 wired to the rest of the house

nothing truly enterprise scale, but good enough for my needs :)

at my college we have like a 34u rack which is filled with cisco routers and switches for CCNA, i just find it truly enjoyable

I would love to buy my own rack. even just a 10-12u, but it seems no one is getting rid of any atm :(

Well it seems I managed to get hold of a 42u server cabinet for the princely sum of 99p on eBay! Picking it up Saturday!

I'm going to be setting this up as a folding cabinet, so I was wondering if someone might be able to point me in the direction of a decent place i can find to get hold of the cases that I can mount in this?
