Got my new 5670... now having issues

I took delievery of my new 5670 yesterday morning from OC. Since then I have been having a few issues.

Not only does the machine refuse to POST on the first try but it also then prompts to say that previous boots have failed. Adding to my frustration is that my BIOS shows my CPU being set for its overclock to 3.2 but everything else shows that its still running at 2.5. The board is an Asus P5N73-AM

Ive done some digging and it seems that my "whip" power supply maybe at fault. Its an 80plus 350W unit. Could my lack of power be whats causing these issues. With my 8400GS its working fine.

Any ideas folks?

Cheers

It should be fine on the PSU, 400W is enough for a 5850 (including the rest of the system). Not only that, but the GPU isn't using any power really on boot, so I can't see that it's the problem. I had my 4890 without the two 6-pin connectors that ran absolutely fine until I tried to game - because it could draw up to 75W from the PCI-E slot.

If it's an 80plus unit, it shouldn't be as bad as most generic PSUs, though, it may be worth trying another.

Ive not got another high power PSU to try - bit of a bugger really. Until i popped the card in yesterday I was running with no problem what so ever.

Power management is turned on but it was before with no issues. Same with everything else really - its only with the new card that I have had issues.

I am running 3 x HDs, 1 DVD drive & one Ext portable HD (powered by the board)

Might have a whip round at work and see what I can borrow for a couple of days. My current one is a Compucase Green Earth 350W.

If I do need a new one can you recommend one - the machine is on 247 so it needs to be as frugal as possible when the machine is idle.

Try running it on your supply with the bare minimum so just the card no overclocks and the operating system hard drive no fans and test for stability if all is well i think you have your answer.

As for recommendations I'd get this psu http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-017-CS&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=1084 total steal at that price.

If you plan or think you might upgrade the card and other hardware in the near future might be worth getting a higher wattage one though.

I'd never trust the minimum reqs as stated by the card suppliers. They are covering their own bottom; they know that some generic psus rated at 700watts can only output around 300 watts!

Thanks for that although its only 50w above what mine "claims" to be now. But then I guess its a decent powersupply.

Its not like its unstable - even with all the kit connected its fine. just the issues above really.

Could there also be an issue with compatibilty?

As long as you have connected all the PCI power cables (I am assuming there is some) to the GPU you should be fine, the 5xxx series consumed significantly less power than 4xxx series did.

It could be a compatability issue, but it is unlikely. I would try a friend's PSU if I were you.

I think odin had this exact same issue, i'll see if i can get him to pm you the details. Not sure he managed to fix it yet mind

The 5670 only draws power from the PCI-E slot, no external connectors. My working theory was that the power draw is just too much for the PCI-E slot, which would explain why the 4870 works but this was doesn't (despite being a much lower powered card).

so new motherboard time?

I really hope not. I have a 530W sat on my desk so will try that tonight. It was only a budget card so having to replace the MB for the sake of getting enought power to the PCI-E slot will really pi55 me off.

well... bugger. A new 530W PSU wasnt the cure I was looking for.

Now the options - do I?

*Put my 8400GS back in and overclock my CPU back to 3.2 (free)
*Leave the 5670 in and keep @ 2.5 (free)
*Buy a new MB (£)
*Stop messing about and get a new PC... put the wedding off (£££££££)

Answers on a postcard

i know - tell me about it. I would have said it was an issue with the card if there wasnt someone else with the exact same card and problem
