Hello fourm people my first post

Got my new Dell 1720 today

One question..don't you need Vista 64 in order to utilise the 4GB RAM?

Vista 32 shows up 3582 of memory , the video card takes the rest

Not so, unfortunately. If you're on a 32-bit OS it definitely isn't using all 4GB of RAM. That said, losing about half a GB isn't that bad.

The video card takes the RAM? Isn't the 8600M GT suppose to be a dedicated card, unlike the X3100, which will utilise the RAM memory for its use?

the video card takes none of the system ram, 32bit OS's can only address 4GB and some of that memory space is used for system resources.

Just checked the 8600GT graphics memory , it has taken extra 418 from the 4GB i installed

How did you "check", SB-2008?

Edit: From what I know it's 3GB(ish) actually used.

I looked in the graphics adapter

Total Availabe Graphics Memory 171 MB
Dedicated Video Memory 256 MB
Shared System Memory 1535 MB
