Got speed?

meh. While I'd like that speed, its still only "average" for most users in other countries. places are rolling out gbit fibre in some countries ffs. While im stuck here on adsl2 fail.

edit: took out a word i typed twice

How many people who post how every other country in the world has FTTH for 20p a year actually bothers to check they aren't talking crap? Yeah UK connections aren't great but it's not terrible either in the most part.

Oh yeh? Beat this! :D

huh hmmm

I think most the time they are in heavily dense cities, where it pays to provide a service there. A bit different to here where they won't exactly roll out fiber to some random village or hamlet in a hurry.

LOL, just did mine out of curiosity:

Reckon that's a bit optimistic there. I am synced at 1,300 / 24,574 though, so 7/8 should be the actual rating.

I go by what is considered the "norm" speed in the other countries, as in when its something like 75% of the population. The UK is massively behind in communications technology (net and phone system). We NEED a fibre network, but the gov dont want to pay for it, so private firms are gradually doing it.

Japan is 100mbit norm, starting to get gbit fibre to your door. France is 50mb norm, 100mb is getting closer to the norm now though. korea is 100mbit norm etc

uk average speed is either 8 or 20, depending on if 20 has over taken 8 recently, or if enough people have got 50 to average out the people who have 1mb living in the sticks.

Please not, I am not complaining about the fact that I only live like 1km from the exchange, but my phone line seems to take a route around the whole of the town before it gets to me, or the fact that I can't get cable in my area because everything here is epic fail. It is the average speed of the country that im referring to.

edit: have a pic

I used the Aberdeen server (25 miles from where I live) and I got that sorta speed, try a different server...

Both your connections will go to Aberdeen via London. Unless the other guy lives further north, you traveled further. I'm not sure why you're competing to have the biggest connection fail, but he has you in this case. :P

That's great but where have you got those details from? If 75% of France can get 50Mb connections then why aren't they anywhere on your fibre chart etc.

who said they were using Fibre broadband? We arent on it at all and we have some "fibre" broadband, but its not fibre to your house is it, so its not proper fibre?

Im not sure exactly tbh, the above is an educated guess, although maybe note educated in the right areas to mak that guess.

Im going by what I have read over the last few years, so i dont have website sources as i dont memorize every website i ever go to. If you dont believe me why dont you go and prove me wrong? We are 14th in the world purely on broadband penetration (anyone having broadband) which is pretty poor considering we are/were a rich western nation.

It's mainly because we've got to the point where we need to replace our communications network, and no ones wants to pay for it, short sightedness of Margaret Thatcher (I heard, from someone?) on choosing the type of network that was installed before, or not to upgrade it at some other point in time.

Dark Fibre sounds pretty cool too, although I dont understand it much, and would love someone to explain it to me in "normal for a techie forum" terms.

:p In my experience speedtest.net can be inaccurate - thinkbroadband has a better speed tester.
