I've put this question in here because it sort of relates to networks so hopefully someone can help.

I want to connect to my PC at work, but my employer does not allow remote desktop connections from external IPs. Also, each PC in work has its own individual/external IP, but when pinging my work PC from at home, the request times out.

So my question is, would either GoToMyPC or LogMeIn work for me?

Thanks

Phil

erm, with respect, don't your company have an official strategy in place for remote access to the network?! i'm a bit biased since i work in i.t. security...but if i found anyone in our organisation was using this sort of technology without permission then i wouldn't be very happy about it. if you need access to the network remotely then surely you should be having this discussion with the internal i.t. department and, if necessary, the management! i'm looking at this with your best interests in mind, since the use of these sort of tools could land you your p45 if your company objects!!!

One of the main ways to connect to the network is through Citrix, however, because of certain security conditions, there are network drives and applications which aren't accessible, but which I need for off-site working.

I have discussed my requirement to have remote access, and the networks team are fine with me using the above services, but they will not unblock any ports on my PC. So with these ports blocked to external traffic will either GoToMyPC or LogMeIn work?

Thanks for your help.

so your internal i.t. people wont provide authorised access to these resources, but they are ok with you trying to find your own workaround?! that's crazy, especially if the resources you need access to are more protected than the rest of the network!

logmein works by opening an outbound connection through the firewall to the logmein application servers...you then connect to logmein and effectively piggyback over the already open connection. this is going to be reliant upon your work pc having the necessary outbound access in the first place...

also, fairly sure the free version of logmein is only free for non-commercial use, so if your not going down the paid route then you might want to read the t&c's otherwise you could end up landing your company in it!

I really won't consider using these sites as an option to be honest. Most services can be configured to be available via citrix including remote desktop. You probably have a form of 2 factor authentication to get into your corp network (RSA / Aladin tokens maybe).
You have to factor in the impact if your account with the service gets compromised, particularly if your business handles credit / debit card information the implications are huge. (I hate security as a rule, as it causes me many issues from an operation prospective) but as I manage remote access for the business I work in, I'd be horrified if users installed this type of application as it's not something that we could have any realistic control over....

edit - forgot to mention, if you require this access and can prove that you need it for business reasons, then unless it presents a huge risk to the business then your security / it teams should have no problem making it work via the means that you have, or offer a suitable work around.

I would not recommend that you attempt to circumvent any remote access systems that your business has in place even if it say it's ok, you'd want written authority as you could be breaching a policy, which could get you the sack. Also, if you were to be made redundant / sacked and this access existed, you could 'potentially' still have access to the systems - from your own point of view, you don't want this, if anything happens to their systems they could blame you...

as has been suggested, just get your internal i.t. people to give you a published desktop via citrix...or alternatively just get them to present you with a remote desktop client so you can then remote into your workstation...at least then they are still in control of the connection and the appropriate authentication methods.

Have you tried connecting to your workstation with Remote Desktop from your citrix desktop? You might find they are on the same network.

Would you believe it?! lol. I found an RDP icon in the 'My Documents' folder of the Citrix desktop. I just editied that with my PC IP address and it worked (although it can be a bit slow, which is prob down to my home internet connection).

Thanks for all your help guys.
