Government drops website blocking

You don't get it do you, this is piracy. Illegal theft of digital media. Yes, they should ban pirate websites and p2p sites at the top level.

Should they also ban Google? That tells us where we can download torrents that could potentially be contravening copyright laws...

Please refer to the million other threads that discuss how this ISN'T theft.

Yes it is theft. I don't care what the other threads say.

OK, so I walk into OcUK store. Ask for a product. They hand me it and I walk off without paying. So, this is not theft either?..... It's the same thing except here were talking about digital media. Most people who download do not own that film or music or application.

IT IS THEFT.

They should not ban Google, however they should ask Google to control their search results e.t.c what can and what can't be searched. For example Torrents, porn, hacking e.t.c.

Its not theft. I cant remember the argument anymore, but it was very conclusive that piracy is not theft. There should be a thread on it somewhere.

Basically, the pirates are making new copies which doesnt affect the number that are on sale and being purchased. No one is losing anything through piracy if that person wouldnt have paid for it anyway.

They ought just put posters up saying “website block zone” That seems to do the trick these days in the United Feardom.

Remember kids, if its on a poster IT’S THE LAW!

I'm sorry but legally speaking IT IS NOT THEFT.

Your example is not the same.

Why shouldn't people be able to download porn or torrents? Are they illegal?

NO!

We are not communists like China.

Also torrents are not illegal, many games that are legally purchased now offer a download in a torrent format.

You've not removed the digital media from the source, you've made a copy. If you walked into OcUK, asked to have a look at some hardware, then made an exact replica, handed back the original OcUK gave you, then walked out without paying you've just done the same as pirating.

It's not theft, it is copyright violation. Yes, it is illegal.

Exactly this.

The offence of theft requires that you deprive the victim of the item in question. If you make a copy of something, the victim is not deprived of it.

Oh come on use bait of common sense it's obvious people who are downloading illegally are doing it via torrents, rapidshare e.t.c. Even you no that!

They need to block the source at the top of who is providing the content. For example, torrent sites. Even if they are providing legal material they are still assisting in the download of illegal material.

I still think it is as you haven't purchased the rights to have it, it's still stolen from the makers.

Another analogy would be if you walk into an Art gallery and take photos or scans of the artworks.

You arent stealing anything, you are just making a free copy, which may or may not be illegal.

For media it is illegal under copyright, but it isnt an act of theft.

Also number of downloads /= number of lost sales.

Go and read the Theft Act 1968 as this is what defines theft, not your misguided opinions.

The key is that there is no intention to permanently deprive the owner of the item, so its not theft.

Exactly this.

The offence of theft requires that you deprive the victim of the item in question. If you make a copy of something, the victim is not deprived of it.

In that case whats the point of a patent, because if your copy someone else's idea then your stealing it or using someone else's technology. Just like the HiPhone, CiPhone, Air Phone China copies.

Your saying that downloaded content like an application along side a serial key or crack isn't theft either? lmao.

Might as well just say anyone can copy or steal anyone else's idea and even cheat on exam papers.
