I am trying to recover some files on a busted vista hdd.

I have booted up gparted as my live disk and I can see the files in the filemanager.

I have plugged in an external hdd and can see the drive in gparted.

How do i transfer files from the hdd to the external drive using gparted?

Can you mount the drive in the file manager of your choice?

Truth be told I have not really used the gparted live usb before.

I just settle with lubuntu usb live and install whatever needed package needed to ram if it is missing.

I'm gona give lubuntu a shot.

I usually use ubuntu and it works 9/10 times. But I have found one machine where the ubuntu scroll bar just well carries on scrolling and never gets any further.

Thanks

I'm trying to help a freind with a busted hdd. He keeps getting blue screen when at the login menu.

Windows reports the drive as 'dirty'.

Running chckdisk doesnt help.

Funny thing is live linux disc do not work either.

Ubuntu just never loads and lubuntu comes up with a bunch of missing libaries...

Put both disks in to a working laptop and they both run fine!

This is the same HDD right as you wrote in the start of the thread?

Most interesting! So the optical disks work on your laptop.

The HDD is reported dirty on his computer. And running chdsk does not help. It finds no errors what so ever?

And booting vista bluescreens?

When does lubuntu warn on libraries? During boot? When mounting? Could you try out a print screen?

Which version of lubuntu are you running from CD?

Warnings for ubuntu/lubuntu are only on his computer?

Can you put lubuntu on USB and boot from that on your friends computer?

I'm just thinking maybe the controller on his computer is broken? Or his optical drive? Or perhaps even both.

Sorry for the slow replies.
