GPO to allow users to change password before expiration during Login Screen

I used to work for a small business in a business administration role and thus has no knowledge of AD/GPO at that point in time etc.

The domain has a default password policy, and when a users password reached the warning period it would tell them during the login and allow them to change the password or continue into Windows.

We've been deploying a GPO at work for a password policy and I can't find this GPO setting anywhere. Searching doesn't bring up anything.

All I've found is the interactive login which just shows a pop up at the right and that isn't what I'm after.

The closest I've gotten is a thread where another member remembers the same as me in that they worked somewhere with the same password changing mechanism. But no one knew how to recreate it.

So TLDR :

I want a GPO setting that will tell a user their password is expiring in X days during Windows login and then allow them to change it there and then or continue to Windows.

Cheers.

I am sure I still get it on Windows 7 at my current employer, as do those on windows 10, i think our popups start 7 days before and are changed every 30 days.

A quick google says you may be right though as looking at this says it changed in Win 7:

I've seen it happen on W7. But seemingly no one knows how, as everyone keeps telling me it's changed.

Bizarre.

I think we're going to try using that VB Script and stick it in their log in scripts.

What's wrong with the way it's done now? the interactive login

The bubble appears for seconds in the corner. It's objectively worse than forcing the user to make a choice to change their password now or later.

I've missed it while I've been looking for it.

I have seen it on 7 too. Lots of machines have migrated to 10 over the past year so will have to have a nosey on the server and see.
